World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Several EU Countries Pause Syrians’ Asylum Applications Until Country’s Safety Is Reviewed (Schengen News) – European countries will not be processing asylum applications filed by Syrian refugees until further notice. The EU governments are monitoring the security situation in Syria and have yet to decide how to proceed with asylum applications. Greece has already taken measures to prepare for Syrians’ deportations, while other countries have put on hold asylum applications. 
  • Israel Carries Out Heavy Strikes on Syria’s Coast, Monitor Says (NYT) – Israel carried out a heavy wave of airstrikes overnight on Syria’s coastal region, a war monitor said early on Monday, as the Israeli military continued to pound Syria in a bid to destroy the country’s military assets after rebels seized power. 
  • Niger says 39 civilians killed in militant attacks (Reuters) – Suspected jihadists killed 39 civilians, including women and children, in two separate attacks in western Niger’s conflict-torn borderlands in recent days, the defence ministry said on Sunday. The attackers struck the communities of Kokorou and Libiri, it said, without giving further details on the date of the bloodshed. 

Demonstrations 

  • Demonstrations have rocked Bolivia for more than two months (NYT). A longstanding political rivalry has boiled over, with supporters of the president and his chief opponent clashing in the streets. Protests have blocked the movement of goods, exacerbating fuel shortages. Some Bolivians lined up for days to buy gas. The upheaval is part of a broad level of unrest across the Andean region of Latin America. Ecuador, Peru and Colombia — Bolivia’s neighbors to the west and north — are all facing significant levels of political turmoil, causing intense anger among their populations.

Environment 

  • Several hundreds, maybe thousands, may have died in Mayotte cyclone (Reuters) – Several hundred people and possibly even thousands may have been killed when the most powerful cyclone in nearly a century hit the French Indian Ocean archipelago of Mayotte, a senior local French official said on Sunday. With winds of more than 200 kph (124 mph), damaging housing, government buildings and a hospital. It was the strongest storm in more than 90 years to hit the islands. 

Health 

  • Seven tourists hospitalized in Fiji from suspected alcohol poisoning (Reuters) – Seven tourists including four Australians were hospitalized in a suspected case of alcohol poisoning at a resort in Fiji, the Australian and Fijian governments said on Monday. The tourists became ill after drinking a cocktail at the Warwick Fiji resort on the south coast of Viti Levu island. 
  • Three nations report more polio cases; UK notes wastewater detections (CIDRAP) – Three countries reported more polio cases this week, including Pakistan, with three more wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases. In other developments, the United Kingdom reported three wastewater detections of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2), as Germany reported six more wastewater detections in six cities.
