Security
- Ukraine launches new attack in Kursk region of western Russia (Reuters) – Russia said on Sunday that Ukraine had launched a new attack in the Kursk region, an area of western Russia from which Russian troops have been trying to eject Ukrainian forces for the past five months. Ukrainian troops broke across the border in a surprise incursion on Aug. 6 and have managed to hold on to a chunk of territory there which could provide Kyiv with an important bargaining chip in potential peace talks.
- Israeli airstrikes push up Gaza death toll amid new truce push (Reuters) – Israel has carried out airstrikes on dozens of Hamas targets in Gaza over the past 24 hours, it said on Friday, in attacks that Palestinian health authorities said had killed more than 110 people in two days. The surge in operations and casualties comes amid a renewed push to reach a ceasefire in the 15-month-old war and return Israeli hostages before U.S. President-elect Donald Trump takes office on Jan. 20.
- Eight policemen, driver killed in Maoist attack in central India (Reuters) – At least eight policemen and a driver were killed in a bomb blast set off by Maoist rebels in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, police said on Monday. The police vehicle in which the victims were travelling was hit by a blast in the Bijapur district of the state on Monday, a police statement said. This is the latest in a series of sporadic attacks on security forces in the state. It follows frequent gunbattles between the forces and the rebels in which several rebels have been killed in recent months.
- Shooting attack on a bus carrying Israelis in the occupied West Bank kills 3 (Arab News) – A shooting attack on a bus carrying Israelis in the occupied West Bank killed at least three people and wounded seven others on Monday, Israeli medics said. Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service said those killed included two women in their 60s and a man in his 40s.
- Five missing Kenyan youths freed amid uproar over abductions (BBC). Five young Kenyan men who went missing just before the Christmas holidays have been found alive, family members and rights groups say. Kenya has been gripped by a wave of disappearances, with the state-funded rights group saying that over 80 people have been abducted in the last six months.
Environment
- Haiti – Food insecurity, torrential rains destroy up to 80% of crops (ERCC) – The increase in violence since November limits population movements, hampers income-generating activities of poor households and has led to the displacement of 21,400 people more in the first seventeen days of December (IOM). 2 million Haitians are estimated to be facing an emergency food insecurity level while 5,4 million people, half of the population, are severely food insecure.
- Ethiopia – Drought and Conflict (ERCC) – The combination of drought and conflict has deteriorated the humanitarian situation in Bugna and Lasta districts, North Wollo, Amhara region, affecting 77,000 people, including 10,000 displaced. Access restrictions imposed by local militia prevent population’s access to services. Telecommunications and the banking system are unfunctional. No Government structure has been present for 3 months.
