This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security
- Nigeria – Increased attacks on civilians in the Northeast (ERCC) – On 12 January, armed groups killed at least 40 farmers and abducted at least 10 others in Kukawa Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State, Northeast Nigeria. Non-compliances with armed groups’ rules and levies often leads to abductions, killings and violence, reinforcing the armed group’s control over the population. 15 years of conflict in the Northeast has claimed the lives of some 35,000 civilians and humanitarian needs remain profound with 7.8 million people in need and 2.3 million people still displaced.
- Man sets himself on fire near South Korean anti-graft office (Reuters) – A man set himself on fire on Wednesday near South Korea’s corruption investigation office, where impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol was being interrogated over insurrection allegations, the national fire agency said. The man, in his 60s, was severely burned and unconscious following the incident which happened just after 8 p.m. local time, the fire agency said.
- Ukraine introduces preventive power cuts after massive Russian missile attack (EURO News) – Ukraine introduced preventative power cuts after Russia launched a massive aerial attack against the country on Wednesday, Ukraine’s energy minister said. “The enemy continues to terrorise Ukrainians,” Herman Halushchenko wrote on Facebook, urging residents to stay in shelters and follow official updates. Regional authorities said one man was killed in Kharkiv and a total of 16 people injured in Russian attacks over the day. In Kramatorsk, in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, eight people including two children were injured in a strike on a multi-storey residential building.
- Swedes recruited by foreign powers on social media to launch attacks, police say (Reuters) – Foreign powers are using social media apps to recruit Swedish gangs and even children for violent attacks against targets like the Israeli embassy, Sweden’s police chief said on Tuesday.
- Netanyahu delays the ceasefire vote, as far-right cabinet members threaten to quit (NPR). Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says a vote on the peace deal between Hamas and Israel scheduled for today will be delayed. It’s a blow to the hopes that an end to the fighting would take place Sunday.

- Hundreds of people demonstrated against the swearing-in of President Daniel Chapo (AP) following disputed elections and deadly unrest.
Environment
- Myanmar – Landslide (ERCC) – On 13 January, a landslide occurred in a jade mine pond located in Sa Paut village in Hpakant township, Kachin State, northern Myanmar leading to casualties and damage. At least 12 people died, many others are unaccounted for and 50 houses have been buried. Rescue and emergency operations have been deployed in the affected area.
- Indonesia – Landslides and floods (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall has been affecting several parts of Indonesia since 13 January, triggering landslides and causing floods that have resulted in casualties and damage. As of 15 January, at least 17 fatalities due to three different landslides, including two in North Sumatra province that caused 14 fatalities and 258 displaced people, and one in Tiban Batu Village of the Batam City, Riau Islands Province, western Indonesia that caused three fatalities, one missing person and five injured people. At least 341 people have been displaced and more than 7,500 people have been affected by floods across Aceh, North Sumatra and Riau provinces.
- Dense fog over Indian capital delays flights, trains (Reuters) – India’s weather office issued an orange alert for Delhi, the second highest warning level, forecasting dense to very dense fog in many areas. Visibility at Delhi’s main airport was between zero to 100 metres (328.08 ft), the weather office said, and more than 40 trains across northern India were delayed because of fog, local media reported.
Health
- Central African Republic – Outbreak of Rift Valley fever (ERCC) – On 10 January, the Minister of Health announced the outbreak of Rift Valley fever in the Central African territory. According to information received five suspicious cases – including one confirmed by the reference laboratory- were detected in the health district of Ngaoundaye, Lim-Pendé prefecture, with one confirmed death and 20 suspected cases under epidemiologic follow up.
- WHO says suspected outbreak of Marburg disease kills 8 in a remote part of Tanzania (AP News) – cases so far, including 8 people who have died said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Without treatment, Marburg can be fatal in up to 88% of people who fall ill with the disease. Symptoms include fever, muscle pains, diarrhea, vomiting and in some cases death from extreme blood loss. There is no authorized vaccine or treatment for Marburg. Suspected Marburg virus outbreak reported in Tanzania (CIDRAP). Health workers are among the suspected cases, and there is significant cross-border movement between Kagera region and three neighboring countries.
