World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Rebels attack DR Congo army ending lull in fighting (BBC) – The Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have attacked Congolese government forces in the South Kivu province, breaking a two-day lull in fighting. Heavy shelling began on Tuesday morning, three days after a summit of East and Southern African leaders called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. The rebels have seized vast swathes of land in the eastern DR Congo, including the major city of Goma.  
  • Sudan fighters accused of storming famine-hit camp (BBC) – A paramilitary force in Sudan has stormed the country’s largest displacement camp, looting and setting fire to the market and several homes, a local refugee group has said. The Zamzam camp in North Darfur has been hit by intense artillery shelling since late last year, but its first time the Rapid Support Forces has been accused of sending in fighters. 
  • Libyan state minister survives assassination attempt in Tripoli (Reuters) – A Libyan state minister survived an assassination attempt when gunmen opened fire on his car in the capital Tripoli on Wednesday, a government statement said. The Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) strongly condemned the attack in which it said an unknown group had shot directly at the vehicle of the state minister for cabinet affairs Adel Juma as it travelled on a highway. 
  • Russia rejects swapping occupied territory with Ukraine (France24) – Russia on Wednesday rejected swapping occupied territory with Kyiv as part of any future peace deal hours after launching a barrage of drones and missiles on Kyiv that killed one person. 
  • Bomb blast kills at least five in Afghanistan (ALJAZEERA) – A bomb blast has killed at least five people and wounded seven in northeastern Afghanistan, local police report. The blast took place at 8:35am on Tuesday near a Kabul Bank branch in Kunduz province. No group has claimed responsibility for the blast yet.

Environment 

  • Philippines – Severe weather and floods, update (ERCC) – As of 11 February, more than 12,638 evacuated people – of whom 10,187 in Mimaropa, and 219 in Eastern Visaya – across 72 evacuation centers, and 2,451 displaced people across both the affected regions. In addition, the same source reports a total of 133,934 affected people, of whom 48,638 in MIMAROPA and 85,296 across Eastern Visayas. 
  • Chile – Wildfires, update (ERCC) – As of 11 February, the wildfires have burnt an area of 8,558 ha in the communes of Ercilla, Lautaro, Purén and Galvarino. The same source reported one fatality, three injured, 27 people that have been sheltered, a total of 44 that have been affected, and at least 30 destroyed houses in the worst affected areas. 
  • Bolivia – Landslide (ERCC) – On 10 February, a landslide triggered by heavy rains occurred in the town of Sorata, in the western La Paz department, in north-western Bolivia, causing casualties and damage. As of 11 February, media reported that a landslide had hit a truck on a road killing two people, the road has been damaged, and several other landslides had been reported in the area. 
  • Brazil – Severe weather, update (ERCC) – As of 11 February, media put the death toll in Pernambuco states at seven, including five in the capital Recife. In the Greater São Paulo region, at least 76,700 people have been affected by power outages and several roads have been flooded. 

Health 

  • Meds platform launch gives children with cancer a fighting chance (UN News) – A new UN-partnered project to distribute essential childhood cancer medicines has begun in Uzbekistan and Mongolia, the first rollout for a project due to be piloted in six countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday. Around 400,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and most of them live in low-income countries where medicines are either unaffordable or unavailable, resulting in an overwhelming 70 per cent death rate.
