World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Infrastructure 

  • 10 killed, 8 injured in Cairo building collapse (Gulf News) – A building collapse in the Egyptian capital killed 10 people and injured eight more on Monday, with several others believed to be missing under the rubble, state media reported. 
  • US funding pause impedes mpox response in DR Congo (CIDRAP). In a weekly briefing yesterday, officials from Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said they are starting to see significant impairment in response operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), specifically a disruption in the transport of samples from suspected cases to labs within and between provinces. 

Environment 

  • Indonesia – Floods (ERCC) –  Parts of Indonesia continue to experience heavy rainfall that has caused floods and damage. Almost 2,400 people have been affected in Pasuruan City, East Java province as well as 867 houses. Additionally, in Bima city, Sumbawa island, West Nusa Tenggara province almost 700 people have been affected, one house has been totally damaged and 169 have been affected. 
  • Philippines – Severe weather and floods (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall caused by the the Intertropical Convergence Zone and Shear Line has been affecting central and southern Philippines. As of 18 February, total of 13,394 displaced people in MIMAROPA, Bicol, Central Visayas, SOCCSKSARGEN regions and Zamboanga Peninsula, approximately 265,500 affected people, and 218 damaged houses in Bicol, Central, Eastern and Western Visayas. 
  • Madagascar – Floods (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall has been affecting central Madagascar, in particular the Antananarivo city area, since 15 February, causing flooding and river overflow that has resulted in affected populations and damage. As of 16 February, a total of 2,936 displaced people in five evacuation centres, 3,688 that have been affected, and 720 houses that have been damaged by the rising waters of the Sisaony river. 
  • Ecuador – Landslide (ERCC) – A landslide, triggered by recent heavy rainfall, occurred in the Portoviejo town area, Manabí province, western Ecuador, resulting in casualties and damage. According to media, three people died, another was injured and a house was buried by the event.
