World Status Report

March 5, 2025

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • A driver rams a car into crowd in Germany’s Mannheim, leaving 2 dead and 11 injured (AP News) – A 40-year-old German from the nearby state of Rhineland-Palatinate was detained and in a hospital after being injured, State Interior Minister Thomas Strobl of Baden-Württemberg, where Mannheim is based 
  • Another journalist killed in Mexico (AP News) – The state prosecutor’s office identified the victim only by his first name, but local media outlets said the victim was Kristian Zavala, who covered local goings on in the city of Silao on his Facebook page. Zavala and another person were killed Sunday, according to the office. 
  • Israeli police say one killed in Haifa bus station knife attack (BBC). An Israeli man has been killed and four other people have been wounded in what police say was a terrorist stabbing attack in the northern Israeli city of Haifa. 
  • At least 31 die in Bolivia after truck rams into bus (Reuters) – A truck traveling on a highway in southern Bolivia collided with a bus early on Monday morning, forcing the bus off the road and killing at least 31 people, police said. Police spokesperson Limbert Choque confirmed the death toll, which he said included both men and women, as ambulances and emergency vehicles arrived at the scene of the accident. Another 22 people suffered injuries. 
  • Pakistani, Afghan security forces clash at closed main border crossing (Reuters) – Pakistani and Afghan security forces clashed on Monday at the recently shuttered main border crossing between the two countries, killing at least one combatant and injuring several, officials said. The conflict erupted on the first working day of the holy Islamic month of Ramadan, when food imports from Pakistan usually peak in Afghanistan, which is facing a humanitarian and hunger crisis. A 10-day-old closure of the Torkham border point has stranded thousands of trucks filled with essential goods. 

Environment 

  • Réunion – Tropical Cyclone GARANCE (ERCC) – Following the passage of tropical cyclone GARANCE on 28 February over Réunion, which brought heavy rain and strong winds, the humanitarian impact is increasing. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service recorded flood and landslide events, particularly across the northern part of the island. Five people died and six others were injured (three were severely injured). Additionally, 60,000 houses are still without electricity while 5% of the population, mainly in Saint-Benoit town, do not have access to running water and 23% is affected by water sully issues. 
  • South Africa – Floods (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall continued to hit the KwaZulu-Natal province, eastern South Africa, causing further flood events. In the past two months, more than 20 people have died due to floods across the aforementioned province. Moreover, more than 3,600 families were relocated, and 2,224 houses were destroyed, with thousands still awaiting temporary shelter.  
  • Indonesia – Floods (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall has been affecting Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan Islands in Indonesia since 2 March, causing flooding and river overflows that have resulted in displacements and damage. As of 3 March, one person died, and four have been injured in Bogor regency of the West Java province. At least 376 people have been internally displaced, including 346 in West Java province and 30 in Jakarta, a total of 12,408 people and 3,203 houses have been affected across Banten, Jakarta, West Java, South Kalimantan, West Sumatra provinces. 
  • Philippines – Floods (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall caused by the combined effect of the easterlies and the shear line has been affecting south-eastern Philippines since 19 February. As of 1 March, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reports 11,629 displaced people, including 1,213 in 10 evacuation centers, and a total of 151,255 affected people in the Caraga Administrative Region. In addition, 15 roads have been affected by flooding and 12 cities have been affected by power outages.
