This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security
- Army surrounds South Sudan vice president’s home as his allies are arrested (AP News) – South Sudanese soldiers surrounded Vice President Riek Machar’s home in the capital on Wednesday and several of his allies were arrested after an armed group allied to him overran an army base in the country’s north.
- Israeli forces kill West Bank Hamas commander (Reuters) – Israeli forces killed a Hamas commander in the West Bank city of Jenin on Tuesday as they pushed ahead with a weeks-long operation against militant groups in the area that has sent tens of thousands of Palestinians fleeing their homes.
- Tunisia puts 40 opposition figures on trial (AP News) – A Tunisian court opened a high-profile trial Tuesday in which 40 people, including leading opposition figures, stand accused of conspiring against state security. Activists protested outside, calling it a baseless case and part of a politically driven crackdown.
- 12 killed, 30 wounded in Pakistan military base attack launched by suicide bombers (AP News) – A group affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in Bannu, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and said that dozens of members of Pakistani security forces were killed. The military didn’t immediately confirm any casualties, but Bannu District Hospital said that at least a dozen people were dead.
- The region with more ‘terror deaths’ than rest of world combined (BBC) – The Sahel region of Africa is the “epicentre of global terrorism” and now, for the first time, accounts for “over half of all terrorism-related deaths”, according to the Global Terrorism Index (GTI).
Demonstrations
- Clashes erupt in Greece as hundreds of thousands protest deadly train crash (Reuters) – Protesters hurled petrol bombs and set fire to trash cans in Athens on Friday as hundreds of thousands of Greeks went on strike and took to the streets in nationwide demonstrations on the second anniversary of the country’s deadliest train crash. Fifty-seven people were killed when a passenger train filled with students collided with a freight train on February 28, 2023 in central Greece.
Environment
- Indonesia – Floods (ERCC) – Since 2 March, heavy rainfall has been affecting Java Island, causing flooding and river overflows that have resulted in displacements and damage. As of 4 March, a total of 2,655 people have been evacuated due to the overflows of Ciliwung, Cikeas, Cilengsih and Kali Angke rivers, of whom 2,406 in the Special Capital Region of Jakarta and 249 in Bogor regency, at least 9,462 people have been affected across the Special Capital Region of Jakarta, Banten and West Java provinces, including 5,640 in Jakarta city. In addition, 2,093 houses have been affected by flooding.
- Madagascar – Tropical cyclone HONDE (ERCC) – As of 5 February, three fatalities, 69 injured people, 21,600 evacuated people, and a total of more than 43,200 affected people across southern and central-western regions of the country, where the worst affected are the Atsimo-Andrefana region and the Menabe region. In addition, the same sources also report over 1,900 destroyed and around 7,200 damaged houses across the affected area.
- Philippines – Floods (ERCC) – The combined effect of the easterlies and the shear line that have been causing heavy rainfall and flooding in the Philippines since 13 January. As of 4 March, a total of 15,880 people have been displaced in Mimaropa, Caraga, Soccsksargen and Bicol regions, including 3,834 in 39 evacuation centres, and 274,670 have been affected.
Health
- Probe in DR Congo unexplained illness cluster shifts toward chemical or meningitis causes (CIDRAP). An ongoing investigation into an unexplained illness cluster in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Equateur province suggests chemical poisoning or rapid-onset bacterial meningitis might be causing the sudden onset of deaths in a village, especially in young men, the World Health Organization (WHO) said yesterday in an outbreak notice.
- Uganda confirms fatal Ebola case in 4-year-old (CIDRAP). Over the weekend the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a new setback in Uganda’s Ebola Sudan outbreak. The country reported a new fatal case, which involved a 4-year-old child who died on February 25.
Humanitarian
- Israeli aid cut threatens care for most vulnerable (UN News) – The unilateral halt to aid deliveries entering Gaza announced by the Israeli authorities on Sunday has left Gazans afraid of a return to violence and lifesaving healthcare services under threat, the UN Children’s Fund
