Security
- 5 children killed and 2 others are missing after a dam collapses in Zimbabwe dam (AP News) – An influx of water following continuous rains in recent weeks breached the walls of the dam at a farm in Chipinge, a remote district in the east of the country, on Sunday. Authorities initially said a four-year-old girl doing laundry with her mother and a 30-year-old man died. The girl’s mother survived.
- At least 8 people are killed when a passenger train slams into a minibus in Egypt (AP News) – A train slammed into a minibus that was crossing the tracks in an unauthorized location in norther Egypt on Thursday, killing at least eight people and leaving 12 injured, the government said. The deadly crash took place in the Suez Canal province of Ismailia, the health ministry said. More than a dozen ambulances were sent to the scene.
- Ethiopia’s Tigray regional government appeals for help after factional fighters seize key towns (AP) – The interim government of Ethiopia’s Tigray region appealed for the Ethiopian federal government to intervene after a faction of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front seized control of two major towns, leaving several people wounded and raising fears or a return to civil war.
- Gangs unleash new attack on Haiti’s capital as police vow to hold them back (Associated Press) – A powerful gang coalition has launched new attacks on Haiti’s capital, driving dozens of families from homes as police vowed Wednesday to hold the gunmen back.
Infrastructure
- Nigeriens frustrated by ongoing fuel shortage (Africa News) – For almost a week, Niger’s service stations have been short of enough premium fuel to meet local demand. As a result, long queues of cars and motorbikes have been forming at those that do have a supply. Fuel is rationed by the Niger Petroleum Company, SONIDEP, and some people say this does not make their day-to-day activities any easier.
Demonstrations
- Tijuana airport blockage enters third day (BorderReport) – Despite torrential rains that are hitting the region, residents of a neighborhood called Maclovio Rojas are refusing to end their blockade of the Tijuana airport. Since Monday, they have blocked access to and from the airport by camping out on the main road leading to and from the terminals. The protest involves what they say is a deal they had with former Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Environment
- Thailand – Severe weather (ERCC) – Thailand experienced extremely high temperatures accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail in certain areas. The northern regions of the country were particularly affected, with strong winds causing damage. Around 3,015 people had been affected and 603 houses had been damaged across seven provinces, namely Lampang, Phetchabun, Uthai Thani, Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Yasothon, and Ubon Ratchathani. Additionally, a storm hit the provinces of Sukhothai and Tak, affecting 1,216 individuals and damaging 304 houses.
- Armenia – Snow avalanche (ERCC) – On 11 March, a snow avalanche occurred in northeast Armenia resulting in casualties. As of 12 March, one person died, seven were injured and one have been rescued after being swept away at the summit of Aragats, an extinct volcano that is the country’s highest peak in Aragatsotn province, in north-eastern Armenia.
- Benin – Severe weather (ERCC) – According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), 1,386 people were affected by strong wind, of which 800 were left homeless, and several structures have been destroyed or damaged, in the districts of Akiza, Kpokissa and Tanwe-Hessou, in the east and southwest of Zogbodomey.
Health
- El Paso, Juarez vigilant as 16 measles cases reported in Chihuahua (Border News) – Authorities in Chihuahua, Mexico, say they have confirmed 15 measles cases in a Mennonite community in the western portion of the state. A 16th case has been confirmed in the city of Namiquipa. Most cases were detected in the Mennonite camps north of Cuauhtemoc, which is 270 miles or a five-hour drive south of El Paso, Texas.
- Dengue cases in Tonga pass 200 (RNZ) – Tonga’s Ministry of Health says total dengue fever cases in the kingdom have reached 215. In an update on Tuesday, the Ministry said 12 people were in hospital. It says just over half of cases, 113, are from Vava’u, with 71 from Tongatapu and 31 from ‘Eua. The youngest case is a seven-month old baby. No deaths have been reported.
- Study finds ‘alarming’ levels of drug-resistant Salmonella in Pakistan (CIDRAP) – A review and meta-analysis finds Salmonella Typhi and Paratyphi samples from human infections in Pakistan were highly resistant to first-line and other commonly used antibiotics. While drug-resistant Salmonella is considered a global public health priority by the World Health Organization, Pakistan has emerged in recent years as a hot spot for multidrug and extensively drug-resistant (MDR and XDR) S Typhi.
- Tanzania reports first mpox cases as African officials look for more vaccine doses (CIDRAP) – Outbreak challenges include keeping up with testing in the DRC and rising deaths and overwhelmed treatment centers in parts of Uganda.
