This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security
- Sudan aid groups say 54 killed in an airstrike blamed on the military in Darfur (AP News) – Aid groups in Sudan said on Tuesday at least 54 people were killed in a military airstrike on a local market in the country’s western region. The strike on Monday on the village of Tora caused a huge fire, according to Adam Rejal, a spokesman for the General Coordination, a local group helping displaced people in Darfur.
- Khartoum is free says Sudan Army chief al-Burhan after airport captured (ALJAZEERA) – Soldiers also encircled areas surrounding the airport in the Sudanese capital on Wednesday, a key development in a two-year-old conflict between the SAF and rival RSF, with the paramilitary’s forces fleeing across a bridge out of that part of the capital.
- Online gangs of teenage boys sharing extreme material are ‘emerging threat’ in UK (The Guardian) – Teenage boys are joining online gangs where they share sadistic and misogynistic material that fuels crimes including fraud, violence and child sexual abuse, the director general of the National Crime Agency has warned.
- EU urges citizens to stockpile 72 hours’ worth of supplies amid war risk (CNN) – The 18-page document warns that Europe is facing a new reality marred with risk and uncertainty, citing Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine, rising geopolitical tensions, sabotage of critical infrastructure, and electronic warfare as prominent factors.
Demonstrations
- Hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza protest against Hamas after conflict resumes (Reuters) – Hundreds of Palestinians have protested in northern Gaza to demand an end to war and chanting “Hamas out,” social media posts showed, in a rare public show of opposition to the militant group that sparked the latest war with its October 7, 2023 raid on Israel.
- Protesters clash with police outside of Chile’s Congress after fishing law vote gets delayed (Reuters) – Police tear gassed and hurled water from cannons at protesters in front of Chile’s national Congress in Valparaiso on Tuesday after a Senate commission delayed a vote on a controversial fishing law that seeks to redistribute quotas between artisanal and industrial fishers.
Environment
- Indonesia – Severe weather and floods (ERCC) – As of 26 March, one person died, one has been injured and 23 houses have been damaged in Kediri Regency of East Java Province due to a severe weather-related incident. In Pati Regency of Central Java province, the overflow of the Silugonggo River affected 796 people. In Central Kalimantan province 28 houses have been affected, including 22 that have been severely damaged by strong winds.
- India – Severe weather (ERCC) – On 22 March, heavy rain, hail and thunderstorms impacted most parts of Odisha state resulting in casualties and damage. As of 26 Mach, two people died due to lightning, one in Ganjam and another in Puri districts, while 67 people were injured in Mayurbhanj district. Moreover, over 600 houses were damaged, leaving many families displaced.
- South Korea – Wildfires (ERCC) – As of 26 March, 18 fatalities, of whom 14 across the North Gyeongsang province and four more in the South Gyeongsang. In addition, the IFRC also reports 19 injured people – of whom six seriously injured – nearly 210 damaged buildings and over 27,070 evacuated people across the three aforementioned affected provinces.
- Tanzania – Severe weather (ERCC) – As of 25 March, 3,620 people have been affected by severe weather across Tanzania. At least 2,165 people have been displaced in evacuation centres from Ulanga district in Morogoro region and 433 houses have been destroyed. In Musoma city 65 people have been sheltered, 165 houses have been destroyed, and several power and water supply systems have been disrupted.
- Bolivia – Severe weather and floods (ERCC) – As of 26 March, 50 fatalities, eight still missing persons, more than 368,700 affected families – with a large part of these displaced – and 770 destroyed houses across 204 municipalities throughout the country. The worst affected is the Palos Blancos municipality, La Paz department. In addition, 109 municipalities declared the state of emergency.
Health
- Tonga’s dengue cases surge to 339 (RNZ) – The number of cases of dengue fever in Tonga continues to rise, the island’s health ministry says. The Tongan government declared a dengue fever outbreak last month. In its latest update on Monday, the ministry said the total number of cases now sits at 339. The majority of the cases are from Vava’u (190), followed by Tongatapu (110), and ‘Eua (39).
- Texas measles outbreak grows as officials warn of rising activity in North America (CIDRAP) – So far 40 people have been hospitalized in the Texas outbreak, and 1 unvaccinated child has died from her infection.
Humanitarian
- Deadly impacts of childhood stunting can be prevented (UN News) – Childhood stunting from malnutrition is a global but preventable problem if adequate investment can be found, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) said on Wednesday, amid chronic funding shortages that threaten essential feeding programmes. Child wasting is the deadliest form of malnutrition and it’s often seen in places of conflict, economic instability and climate crisis, the UN agency told aid leaders gathered in Paris for the fourth Nutrition for Growth Summit.
Migration
- UN says more than 21,000 people fled Syria sectarian violence for Lebanon (ARAB News) – The hostilities in early March continue to displace people on a steady daily basis” into northern Lebanon, the UNHCR statement said, reporting “21,637 new arrivals from Syria” citing figures provided by Lebanese authorities and the Lebanese Red Cross.
