This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security
- Gaza aid worker killings: One humanitarian still missing in mass grave (UN News) – UN humanitarians and partners on Tuesday expressed deep shock at the killing of 15 colleagues on duty in southern Gaza by Israeli forces whose remains were recovered on Sunday from a shallow grave after a week-long rescue operation, noting that one worker is still missing.
- Congo commutes death sentences for US citizens in failed coup (Reuters) – The death sentences of three U.S. citizens convicted for their role in a failed coup in Democratic Republic of Congo last year have been commuted to life imprisonment, the presidency said, ahead of a visit by the new U.S. senior advisor for Africa. The Americans were among some 50 people, including U.S., British, Canadian, Belgian and Congolese citizens, who stood trial last year following the botched attempt to overthrow the government in May.
- Israel announces expansion of military operation in Gaza (CNN) – Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced Wednesday a major expansion of the military’s operation in Gaza involving the seizure of large areas of land that would be “incorporated into Israel’s security zones.” In the statement, Katz said the operation would also involve a “large-scale evacuation of Gaza’s population from combat zones,” without specifying details.
- Kenyan police in Haiti suffer more casualties in clashes with gangs (Reuters) – Two Kenyan police officers in Haiti have been seriously injured in clashes with gangs over the past week, three officers told Reuters, adding to the mission’s growing list of casualties as it comes under increasingly frequent attack.
- Jalisco cartel lures recruits with fake jobs through social platforms and kills those who resist (AP News) – Online recruiting techniques and complicit local authorities have been among the details revealed by the renewed investigation of a ranch in western Mexico where authorities say the Jalisco New Generation Cartel trained its recruits.
Infrastructure
- Malaysia – Gas pipeline fire (ERCC) – In the morning of 1 April, a big fire occurred at a Petronas gas pipeline in Putra Heights, Puchong town, Petaling District, Selangor state resulting in casualties and damage. 112 people have been injured, 305 people have been evacuated and 190 houses have been damaged.
- European visitors now need an entry permit to visit the UK (France 24) – Travellers from Europe will now need a digital Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) permit, which UK officials said they were rolling out to boost security and streamline entry processes.
Environment
- Philippines – Severe weather (ERCC) – As of 1 April, 558 people have been displaced in the Davao de Oro region, with 29 individuals sheltered in one evacuation center. A total of 20,034 people have been affected in the Davao regions, comprising 18,149 in Davao de Oro and 1,885 in Davao Occidental, and 15 houses have been damaged, with 10 totally destroyed.
- Greece – Floods (ERCC) – As of 31 March, 15 people were rescued on the island of Paros and Mykonos, with no injuries reported. As of 1 April, media further reported that rescue crews on Chania Crete rescued eight people whose vehicles were trapped by floodwaters. The same sources report that torrential rains have caused widespread disruption, power outages and road closures across the islands.
Health
- New cases push US measles total past 500 (CIDRAP) – Outbreak-related cases were reported in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, amid new illnesses from a handful of other states.
Humanitarian
- Somalia – Food insecurity and acute malnutrition (ERCC) – Across 21 areas, 4.6 million people (slightly more than 1 out of 3 Somalis) are now projected to experience high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above), marking a notable increase from the January 2025 projections. The projected acute malnutrition burden for 2025 has also increased to 1.8 million children under the age of five. This includes 479,000 children likely to be severely malnourished.
- Survivors still being found from Myanmar earthquake, but hopes begin to fade as deaths exceed 2,700 (AP News) – Rescue workers saved a 63-year-old woman from the rubble of a building in Myanmar’s capital on Tuesday, but hope was fading of finding many more survivors of the violent earthquake that killed more than 2,700 people, compounding a humanitarian caused by a civil war.
