Security
- Sudan crisis: UN rights chief condemns extrajudicial killings in Khartoum (UN News) – The fight for Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, likely involved widespread summary executions of civilians following its recent recapture by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), UN human rights chief Volker Türk said on Thursday. Citing credible reports of extrajudicial killings in several areas of the capital, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said that the victims were suspected of collaborating with rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fighters.
- Sudan: Sexual violence used as weapon of terror against women and girls (UN News) – Amid alarming reports of sexual violence being used as a weapon of terror across Sudan, UN reproductive health agency, UNFPA, is warning that over 12 million women and girls – and increasingly men and boys – are estimated to be at risk.
- Israeli strikes on Gaza overnight leaves at least 100 Palestinians dead (PBS) – Israeli airstrikes killed at least 100 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip on Thursday, including at least 27 sheltering at a school in the north, according to Palestinian medical authorities, in a stepped-up offensive that Israel’s military said is intended to put new pressure on Hamas and eventually expel the militant group.
Demonstrations
- Thousands of Haitians take to streets to protest surging gang violence (Reuters) – Thousands of Haitians took to the streets in Port-au-Prince on Wednesday to express their anger against armed gangs that control nearly all of the capital and surrounding areas and the government’s failure to hold them off.
- Murders of two female students prompt calls for a ‘cultural rebellion’ in Italy (The Guardian) – The murders sparked protests in Messina, Rome and other Italian cities, including Bologna, on Wednesday night. Further events are planned on Thursday.
- Thousands of Slovaks protest against Russian-style law targeting NGOs (Euronews) – Citizens across Slovakia have been protesting for months over Prime Minister Robert Fico’s shift towards Russia and away from the EU.
Environment
- Myanmar, Thailand – 7.7 M Earthquake (ERCC) – The humanitarian impact of the 7.7 M earthquake that occurred on 28 March in the Mandalay city in central Myanmar is still increasing. As of 3 April, media reports 3,085 fatalities, 4,715 injured people, still 341 missing people. The AHA Centre reports that 21,783 houses have been affected, of which 15,114 have been destroyed, and that the state of emergency remains in effect for Mandalay, Sagaing Magway, Shan State, Naypyidaw, and Bago areas.
- South Korea – Wildfires (ERCC) – The death toll from the severe wildfires that burnt across southern regions of South Korea since 21 March is still increasing. According to media, as of 2 April, the wildfires have burnt an area of 48,000 ha across 11 regions and resulted in 31 fatalities, 44 injured people, 3,307 displaced people, and at least 4,015 damaged houses.
- Paraguay – Floods (ERCC) – Since 26 March, heavy rainfall and ensuing floods have affected parts of Paraguay, particularly the department of Alto Paraguay, northern Paraguay, resulting in displacement and limited access to affected communities. According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and as of 3 April, 500 people have been displaced and a total of 6,000 affected.
Health
- Fatal H5N1 case reported in India’s Andhra Pradesh state (CIDRAP) – According to Press Trust of India, the girl died on March 15 following hospitalization in Mangalagiri. The H5N1 findings were confirmed by the National Virology Institute based in Pune. No related infections were found in the girl’s family members, and no poultry outbreaks were reported in Palnadu district where the girl lived. The girl’s family said she had eaten raw chicken, which investigators say is her potential infection source.
- Mpox activity in Africa on pace to pass 2024 total (CIDRAP) – Ghana reported its first recurrence in many weeks, as cases rise in Tanzania and responders launch a second vaccination round in Uganda.
- At least 560 measles cases have been reported in the US this year (NYT), with 516 cases associated with outbreaks and 44 isolated cases. Measles continues to spread in Texas and New Mexico, and has spilled into the neighboring states of Oklahoma and Kansas. The outbreak is likely to persist for a year, according to Texas health officials.
- Patients Are Being Denied Medicines in Festering Colombia Health Crisis (Bloomberg) – Long lines form daily outside medical pharmacies in Bogotá and other major cities, with industry and government blaming each other for the lack of available prescription medicines.
