This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

- French prisons again targeted overnight (Reuters) – French prison officers and detention centres were again targeted overnight, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Monday, following a string of unclaimed attacks on prisons last week. Authorities have said that drug traffickers are most likely behind an unprecedented wave of attacks against French prisons, though foreign influence and the far-left have also been mentioned, but no arrests have been made.
- Woman dead and man shot in alleged carjackings on Sunshine Coast (ABC AU News) – A 22-year-old woman has been killed and a man shot in a string of alleged carjackings on the Sunshine Coast. Police were called to a crash on the Bruce Highway near Aussie World shortly after midday on Monday. The 41-year-old Tewantin man accused of being behind the wheel got out of the Porsche and allegedly shot the driver of another car in the arm before fleeing in that vehicle.
- Russian attacks on Ukraine during Easter ceasefire killed three (EURO News) – Russia violated the ceasefire more than 2,900 times, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a Telegram statement in the early hours on Monday. Russian attacks during the 30-hour Easter ceasefire announced by President Vladimir Putin at the weekend killed three people in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, the local governor has said.
Environment
- Democratic Republic of the Congo – Floods (ERCC) – As of 15 April, approximately 10,000 people have been displaced due to the Rugumba River overflow, with Kalemie and Nyunzu towns, in the central Tanganyika Province, being the most affected.
- Pakistan – Severe weather (ERCC) – As of 16 April, one person was killed and another injured in a flood event in Chilas city, located in the Kashmir region of northern Pakistan. The flooding also caused disruptions to traffic and electricity, as well as substantial damage to buildings, vehicles, and crops.
- Thailand – Landslide (ERCC) – As of 16 April, report two injured people due to a landslide at Haew Narok waterfall in Nakhon Nayok province. According to the same source, the waterfall has been closed indefinitely to the public due to safety concerns associated with the start of the wet season.
- Italy – Severe weather and landslides (ERCC) – As of 17 April, at least 40 people have been preventively evacuated and several roads have been closed in Villadossola and Beura Cardezza municipalities, in Verbania province (northeastern Piemonte region), due to two landslides, and two families have been displaced in Giaveno municipality of Torino province.
Health
- Indians battle respiratory issues, skin rashes in world’s most polluted town (Reuters) – Two-year-old Sumaiya Ansari, a resident of India’s Byrnihat town which is ranked the world’s most polluted metropolitan area by Swiss Group IQAir, was battling breathing problems for several days before she was hospitalised in March and given oxygen support. She is among many residents of the industrial town on the border of the northeastern Assam and Meghalaya states – otherwise known for their lush, natural beauty – inflicted by illnesses that doctors say are likely linked to high exposure to pollution.
- US measles total climbs to 800 cases, 10 outbreaks (CIDRAP) – As more states report outbreaks, the country is well on track to reach the most cases since measles was eliminated in 2000.
Migration
- Sudan war: Hundreds of thousands flee renewed violence in North Darfur (UN News) – A mass wave of displacement in Sudan’s North Darfur state is pushing hundreds of thousands into precarious conditions far from lifesaving aid, as overstretched operations struggle to keep pace with the growing emergency. Renewed attacks on camps – including Zamzam and Abu Shouk – that were sheltering those displaced by earlier violence have now forced an estimated 400,000 to 450,000 people to flee again.
