World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Outrage as Russian overnight attacks on Ukraine cities kill at least nine civilians (UN News) – Grim details continued to emerge on Thursday in the aftermath of a wave of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital and other cities overnight, with early reports indicating that at least nine people were killed and dozens injured. Reports indicate that the latest Russian strikes damaged 12 buildings in the capital, causing widespread damage to homes, businesses and key services, while phones have been heard ringing from the rubble. 
  • Car plows into crowd near elementary school in eastern China (NHK News) – Hong Kong and other media outlets say multiple injuries have been reported after a car drove into a crowd of people near an elementary school in eastern China. The reports say the incident occurred in the city of Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, at around 6 p.m. on Tuesday. A man whose child attends the school said the vehicle drove into the crowd while he was waiting in front of the building after classes ended. 
  • Benin admits that 54 soldiers killed in attack by al-Qaeda group (BBC) – Benin’s government has admitted that 54 soldiers were killed by suspected jihadists in the country’s north last week near the borders with Burkina Faso and Niger. The authorities had previously said that only eight soldiers were killed. The revised figure makes it the deadliest known attack since insurgents began operating in northern Benin at the beginning of the decade. 
  • Exclusive: Myanmar junta defies quake ceasefire to continue deadly attacks, data shows (Reuters) – Myanmar’s junta has kept up a deadly military campaign, including airstrikes and artillery assaults, despite announcing a ceasefire after a major earthquake killed thousands in March, according to the United Nations and data from a crisis monitor. 
  • Cartel conflict shuts down highways in Michoacán (Mexico News Daily) -Cartel conflict wreaked havoc across the western state of Michoacán on Wednesday, as organized crime gangs blockaded 10 highways by setting vehicles on fire.

Environment 

  • India – Severe weather (ERCC) – Since 18 April, a severe storm bringing heavy rains and strong wind has been affecting Tripura state in northeastern India, resulting in fatalities and damage. As of 23 April, two people died, two have been injured, and more than 500 homes have been damaged or destroyed. In addition, power supply was disrupted in the region. 
  • Pakistan – Landslides (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall affected north-eastern Pakistan, particularly the Gilgit-Baltistan region over the last few days, triggering landslides that have resulted in casualties and damage. As of 24 April, one fatality and four injured persons due to two different landslide events that occurred in the Ghanche district and in the Skardu district, eastern Gilgit-Baltistan region.
