World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Blast at peace meeting in Pakistan’s South Waziristan kills 7 (Reuters) – At least seven people were killed in a blast during a meeting of a local peace committee in Pakistan’s South Waziristan region on Monday, police said. The explosion caused a portion of the building where the meeting was taking place to collapse, police officer Usman Wazir said, adding that it was not clear who was behind the attack. 

Infrastructure 

  • Spain, Portugal and parts of France hit by massive power outage (EURO News) – A nationwide power outage hit Spain and Portugal on Monday, leaving millions without electricity. Reports indicate issues with the European electric grid. This is what we know. Spain and Portugal experienced a widespread power outage on Monday, leaving millions without electricity in a snap blackout. In Portugal, official sources told domestic media that the outage, which hit around late morning local time, was nationwide, while similar reports emerged from Spain. 
  • Iran blames ‘negligence’ for port blast as death toll rises to 70 (BBC) – Eskandar Momeni said Saturday’s blast at Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas, which also injured more than 1,000 people, was caused by “shortcomings, including noncompliance with safety precautions and negligence”. 
  • Khartoum (NPR). The outside world is getting a glimpse of the state of Sudan’s capital city of Khartoum for the first time since the Sudanese army liberated the city after two years of civil war. The once-vibrant city has been systematically destroyed and hollowed out by the brutal fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. NPR is one of the few Western news outlets that has made it into the city.  
     

Environment 

  • Bolivia – Severe weather and floods (ERCC) – As of 26 April, the death toll has reached 58, with ten people still reported missing. Additionally, nearly 3.2 million people have been affected, and almost 10,000 houses have been damaged or destroyed. 
  • Malaysia – Floods (ERCC) – As of 28 April, a total of more than 1,420 evacuated people, of which 608 evacuated people are in one evacuation centre in Kuala Selangor town, and 552 evacuated people are in four evacuation centres across the Petaling district, Selangor state. 
  • Vietnam – Severe weather (ERCC) – As of 28 April, one fatality in the Thanh Hoa province, two injured persons in the Nghe An province and a total of more than 3,900 affected people across northern and central-northern Vietnam. In addition, 46 houses were destroyed and 934 damaged across the affected area. 
  • Four dead, 13 injured in Algeria landslide (ARAB News) – Four people have died and 13 others injured in a landslide in Algeria’s western coastal city of Oran, authorities said on Sunday. The landslide occurred late Saturday in the city’s Hai Essanouber district, the civil defense agency said. 
  • South Korean city orders more than 1,200 residents to evacuate due to wildfire (Reuters) – The South Korean city of Daegu ordered on Monday more than 1,200 residents to evacuate after strong winds whipped up a wildfire and prompted the closure of a highway in the area due to concerns about the blaze.
