This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- Nigeria – Increased attacks on civilians in the Northeast (ERCC) – Similar attacks occurred in Borno State on 26 April, when armed groups killed at least ten members of a vigilante group on patrol, last week when 14 farmers were killed and mid-April when a bus hit a IED killing 8 people and injuring 21.
- Swedish police detain 16-year-old after three killed in Uppsala shooting (The Guardian) – A 16-year-old has been detained on suspicion of shooting and killing three people in the city of Uppsala, according to Sweden’s prosecution authority. An intensive investigation is under way. We are now gathering information and the police are conducting door-to-door inquiries and interviewing witnesses said the authorities.
- Guyana imposes a curfew after violent protests over 11-year-old girl’s death (AP News) – The clashes occurred outside the capital’s main hospital as three pathologists, including one flown in from the U.S., performed an autopsy on the girl identified as Adrianna Younge. They determined that she died from drowning. Her friends and family have asserted, without giving evidence, she was abducted at a coastal resort last week and sacrificed as a religious ritual.
- What to know about the recent needle attacks on Mexico City’s Metro (Mexico News Daily) – A man accused of injecting a female passenger with a sedative on the Mexico City Metro was arrested and charged with assault this week after more than 20 victims reported similar attacks over the past two weeks.
- Clashes near Damascus (AP News). Violence between pro-government fighters and those belonging to the minority Druze sect killed at least ten people near Damascus yesterday, a war monitor and activist group said.
Environment
- Ecuador – Floods and landslides (ERCC) – According to the National Secretariat for Risk Management (SNGR), as of 28 April, and since 1 January, 48 people have died, more than 182,000 individuals have been affected, and nearly 60,000 buildings have been damaged or destroyed.
- Iran – Severe weather (ERCC) – According to media reports and humanitarian actors, two persons died, and 41 others were injured. Of the injured, 12 were treated on site by emergency medical teams, while 29 others were transported to medical centers for further treatment.
- Philippines – Volcanic eruption (ERCC) – On 29 April at 11:43 UTC, another phreatic eruption occurred at the summit of Bulusan Volcano, lasting 77 minutes. The DROMIC reports that 276 people have been evacuated to two evacuation centers, and nearly 93,000 individuals across 63 barangays in Sorsogon Province have been affected.
- Viet Nam – Severe weather (ERCC) – As of 28 April, reports that two people were killed by lightning and three injured in Son La and Kon Tum provinces. In total, 176 people were affected, 44 houses were damaged, and crops were destroyed.
- Peru – Landslide and flood (ERCC) – As of 28 April, two people were killed, with five others reported missing and around 100 injured. Additionally, 60 homes were affected, with 50 sustaining minor damage, while three bridges and one road collapsed. The incident also caused power outages and disruptions to drinking water supplies. As a precautionary measure, classes were suspended in public schools.
Health
- Top virologists urge world leaders to act on rising avian flu threat (CIDRAP) – Global Virus Network scientists highlight the need for robust surveillance, enhanced biosecurity, and readiness for potential human-to-human viral transmission.
- Chihuahua becomes epicenter of measles outbreak in Mexico (Border Report) – Health Secretary Dr. David Kershenobich said 583 measles cases have been confirmed as of Tuesday, with 560 of those (96%) being reported in Chihuahua. One fatality has been confirmed so far.
Humanitarian
- Plague of rats and insects provides latest challenge for war-shattered Gazans (UN News) – After suffering almost 18 months of deadly bombardment, displacement and lack of access to basic services, the embattled people of Gaza face yet another challenge: the threat of insects and rodents.
