World Status Report

May 2, 2025

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Kenyan MP shot dead in ‘targeted’ attack in Nairobi (BBC) – A Kenyan member of parliament has been shot dead in the streets of the capital Nairobi by gunmen on a motorcycle in a suspected assassination. Police said the attackers had been trailing Charles Ong’ondo Were’s vehicle before one of them got off the motorbike and shot him at close range.  
  • Pakistani Kashmir closes seminaries fearing Indian military strikes (Reuters) – The government of Pakistan-administered Kashmir has closed all religious seminaries in the region for 10 days, officials said on Thursday, citing fears they would be targeted by Indian strikes following a deadly attack on tourists in Indian Kashmir. 
  • Indian authorities have detained at least 1,500 people in India-administered Kashmir (NPR) after a militant attack killed 26 people last week, a top police officer told NPR. Several homes linked to alleged militants were also destroyed. 
  • Russia launches deadly drone attack on Odesa (BBC) – Russian drones have killed at least two people and injured another five in a sustained attack on the Ukrainian city of Odesa, the regional leader has said. Residential high-rise buildings, a supermarket and school were damaged, Oleh Kiper posted on Telegram. Russia has not yet commented on the attack.  
  • Israel strikes Syria, hitting group that attacked Druze (Reuters) –  Israel carried out a strike in Syria against “an extremist group” that attacked members of the Druze community, following through on a promise to defend the minority group as deadly sectarian violence spread near Damascus on Wednesday. 
  • Israeli drone strikes kill 4 in Lebanon (ARAB News) – Victims of the Israeli attacks included 3 people collecting scrap from damaged buildings, and a former paramedic riding a motorcycle. President Joseph Aoun says ‘Lebanese army controls more than 85% of the south after clearing it, in a military sense, as part of its commitments to the ceasefire’. 
  • UK launches strikes against Yemen (NYT) – The United Kingdom (UK) announced yesterday that it joined the U.S. strikes on Yemen’s Houthi rebels for the first time during the Trump administration. The UK had previously cooperated on some such strikes under President Joe Biden.
