World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Central African Republic – Conflict (ERCC) – A series of attacks and counterattacks between regular army and Wagner Group trained militia happened in multiple localities in Eastern Central African Republic. These led to movements of the population, with around 900 displaced households. Moreover, there has been a massive influx of people to the hospital in Zemio: 114 pregnant women, 531 children under the age of five, including 265 girls, and 144 nursing mothers. 
  • Pakistan tests missile, India orders drills amid Kashmir standoff (Reuters) – Pakistan carried out a second missile test in three days on Monday and India said it ordered several states to conduct security drills, as fears mounted the neighbors could be heading to a confrontation over a deadly attack in Kashmir. Moody’s warned that the standoff could set back Islamabad’s economic reforms as world powers called for calm. 
  • Gold mining suspended in Peru’s north after 13 miners killed (Reuters) – Mining in Peru’s northern district of Pataz will be suspended for 30 days, President Dina Boluarte said on Monday, after 13 gold mine workers in the area were kidnapped and killed by illegal miners. Peru’s government also plans to set up a military base and implement a curfew lasting from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the district. 
  • Woman killed as gunmen attack Damascus nightclub (ARAB News) – Armed men opened fire inside a club in Damascus on Monday, killing a woman, according to a witness and a war monitor, the second attack in a week targeting the Syrian capital’s nightlife. 

Infrastructure 

Environment 

  • Iraq – Sandstorm (ERCC) – On 5 May, a severe sandstorm swept across Iraq, causing widespread respiratory issues. Nearly 550 people have been hospitalized following the storm. Authorities urged residents to remain indoors and take precautionary measures. 
  • Pakistan – Severe weather and floods (ERCC) – As of 6 May, media reports a total of six fatalities, including two people who died in Karak district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, due to flooding, and four people who died in South Punjab due to lighting. In addition, four others have been injured in South Punjab in the same incident, and one house have been damaged in Bajaur district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.   
  • Afghanistan – Floods and flash floods (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall bringing floods and flash floods have been affecting Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan, causing fatalities, injuries and damage. According to media, at 5 May, two people were killed and three injured. Roads and buildings, drinking water networks as well as farmland have been destroyed. 
  • Jordan – Flash floods (ERCC) – Heavy rains resulting in flash floods have been affecting Shouback municipality, Ma’an governorate, southern Jordan, causing fatalities. As of 4 May, that two people died, 14 people were rescued, and more than 1,700 people have been evacuated on 4 May near the town of Petra. 

Migration 

  • Exhausted Sudanese flee into Chad as fighting escalates (UN News) – Thousands of exhausted Sudanese refugees continue to flee fighting in search of safety in neighbouring Chad, aid teams said on Tuesday, as a third day of drone strikes ripped into the city of Port Sudan. Nearly 20,000 people – mainly traumatized women and children – have reached Chad in the past two weeks, according to the UN refugee agency, UNCHR.
