This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security
- Burkina Faso military accused of killing over 100 civilians in ‘massacre’ (BBC) – At least 130 civilians were killed by Burkina Faso government forces and allied militia in March near the western town of Solenzo, Human Rights Watch (HRW).
- Thirteen dead after blast during Indonesian military ammunition disposal (Reuters) – Thirteen people died in a blast during a disposal of expired military ammunition in Indonesia’s West Java on Monday, army officials told local media, the second incident involving expired ammunition in the country in little over a year. Nine of the victims were civilians while four were military personnel, military spokesperson Kristomei Sianturi told Kompas TV, adding the military is investigating the cause of the incident.
- Eleven soldiers killed in Ecuador after clash with criminal group (Reuters) – Eleven soldiers were killed and one was injured in Ecuador’s Amazon region during an armed confrontation with a criminal group, the country’s defense ministry said on Friday. The troops were attacked during an operation targeting illegal mining in the Alto Punino area, the ministry said.
- Pakistan hit 26 Indian military facilities in strikes on Saturday (Reuters) – Pakistan hit 26 Indian military facilities and dozens of its drones hovered over major Indian cities, including India’s capital New Delhi, in offensive operations on Saturday, a Pakistan military spokesperson said at a press briefing late on Sunday.
- Top military officials from India and Pakistan met on Monday (BBC) after a truce announced on Saturday mostly held, to discuss finer details of the ceasefire agreed between them over the weekend.
Environment
- Viet Nam – Severe weather (ERCC) – As of 12 May, reports that one person died in Lao Cai province (nort-western Viet Nam), one is still missing in Binh Duong province, southern Vietn Nam due to flooding and landslides, and one has been injured in Quang Tri province, central Viet Nam due to lighting.
- Democratic Republic of the Congo – Floods (ERCC) – As of 12 May, approximately 100 fatalities and around 30 injured people across the area of the Kasaba village, South Kivu province. In addition, media also report that the affected area remains isolated.
- Colombia – Landslide (ERCC) – As of 12 May, five people died, three have been injured, and two have been sheltered. Flooding and damage to infrastructures have also been reported in the same area.
- Brazil – Severe weather and floods (ERCC) – In Santa Catarina state, media report as of 12 May, two fatalities in the area of Palmistos municipality and Caibi municipality and six injured people in Mondaí municipality. In addition, media also report 20 displaced families and 150 damaged houses across the state. In Rio Grande do Sul state, media report 13 displaced people and two damaged houses in Santa Maria municipality and approximately 100 damaged houses across the Soledade municipality.
Health
- Nipah in India, polio in 2 nations (CIDRAP) – India’s National Institute of Virology have confirmed a Nipah virus infection in a 42-year-old woman hospitalized in India’s Kerala state. Two African countries reported more polio cases this week.
- US measles total climbs to 1,001 cases (CIDRAP) – About 93% of cases reported to the CDC are part of 14 different outbreaks.
Humanitarian
- Gaza: Starvation looms for one in five people (UN News) – Gazans remain at “critical risk of famine”, UN-backed food security experts warned on Monday, a full 19 months since war began with Israel and 70 days since deliveries stopped of all aid and commercial supplies.
