This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security
- Suicide bomber kills five on school bus in Pakistan’s Balochistan (Reuters) – At least three children were among five people killed when a suicide bomber struck an army school bus in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province. Around 40 students were on the bus, which was headed to an army-run school, and several sustained injuries, said Yasir Iqbal, administrator of Khuzdar district, where the incident took place.
- Lebanon says 9 wounded in Israeli strike (ARAB News) – Lebanon’s health ministry said an Israeli strike on Tuesday wounded nine people in the country’s south, the latest attack despite a ceasefire between Israel and militant group Hezbollah.
- Two top aides to Mexico City mayor shot dead by motorbike killers (Reuters) – Two top aides of Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada were shot dead after being ambushed by gunmen on a motorbike in a daytime attack in the city center on Tuesday.
Environment
- Philippines – Flooding in Mindanao (ERCC) – On 20 May 2025, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported 38,689 families (192,005 persons) affected.
- China – Floods and landslides (ERCC) – As of 21 May, six fatalities, of whom three were in the Guangxi province, in the Baise city area due to floods, and three more were in the Guangdong province, in the Gaozhou city area due to a landslide event.
- India – Severe weather (ERCC) – As of 21 May, five people were killed due to rain-related incidents and lightning. Around 500 buildings were flooded, and power outages and public transport disruptions were reported, as were uprooted trees and killed livestock.
- Indonesia – Floods (ERCC) – As of 21 May, 105 evacuated people in two evacuation centres across the Karawang regency, West Java province and the neighbouring Demak regency, Central Java province. In addition, ADINet also reports a total of nearly 12,900 affected people and around 3,200 affected houses across both the aforementioned regencies.
- Argentina – Floods (ERCC) – As of 19 May, one person has died, four people are missing, and 500 have been injured. A total of 4,090 people have been displaced, with an undetermined number of people requiring evacuation, and a total of 25,000 people have been affected. At least 28 municipalities or departments have reported some type of damage, while access to some cities has been cut off.
- Flash floods cut off inland Australian towns, residents flee to rooftops (Reuters) – Heavy rain in Australia’s southeast triggered flash flooding and cut off entire towns on Wednesday, stranding some residents on the roofs of their homes, as authorities issued snap evacuation orders with rivers staying above danger levels.
Health
- Family likely infected with histoplasmosis in bat-colonized cave (CIDRAP) – A new report describes how 12 members of an extended US family who toured a bat-colonized Costa Rican cave tied to a previous histoplasmosis outbreak returned with confirmed or likely cases of the fungal disease.
Humanitarian
- Gaza: Aid trucks still waiting for Israeli green light inside enclave (UN News) – UN aid workers said on Wednesday that they are still waiting for permission from Israel to distribute five trucks’ worth of lifesaving relief that was allowed into Gaza at the start of the week, after an 11-week blockade.
