Security
- At least 42 killed in weekend attacks in Nigeria’s Benue state (Reuters) – Thirty-two bodies were recovered from Sunday’s assaults on the Ahume and Aondona villages, while 10 more were killed in a separate attack on the villages of Tyolaha and Tse-Ubiam on Saturday, said Victor Omnin, chairman of the Gwer West local government.
- Driver arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after Liverpool soccer parade tragedy (AP News) – A 53-year-old British man who injured 65 people when his car rammed into a crowd of Liverpool soccer fans celebrating their team’s Premier League championship was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police said Tuesday.
- Gaza rescuers say 52 killed in Israeli strikes, including 33 in a school (ARAB News) – Rescuers said Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip killed at least 52 people on Monday, 33 of them in a school-turned-shelter, as European allies ramped up their criticism of Israel.
Infrastructure
- Hundreds of workers remain underground after ‘shaft incident’ at South African gold mine, company says (ABC News) – Hundreds of workers remain underground at the Kloof gold mine near Johannesburg after a “shaft incident” occurred at Sibanye Stillwater’s sub-shaft, the South Africa-based mining company said Friday.
- Russian hackers target Western firms shipping aid to Ukraine, US intelligence says (Associated Press) – Hackers working for Russian military intelligence targeted Western technology and logistics companies involved in shipping assistance to Ukraine, the U.S. National Security Agency said.
- Organization of American States under pressure to help quell gang violence in Haiti (Associated Press) – The Organization of American States came under pressure Thursday to help quash gang violence in Haiti as a U.N.-backed mission led by Kenyan police in the troubled Caribbean country struggles with a lack of funds and personnel.
Environment
- Indonesia – Earthquake (ERCC) – As of 26 May, a total of 792 people have been affected and 206 buildings have been damaged across the Bengkulu city area, in central Bengkulu province.
- Vietnam – Floods (ERCC) – As of 26 May, a total of 1,800 people and 450 houses have been affected by floods, and more than 2,220 hectares of crops have been damaged.
- El Salvador – Coastal floods (ERCC) – As of 27 May, more than 50 injured people and a number of damaged buildings and infrastructure across the area of the El Majahual locality, close to La Libertad town (La Libertad department, El Salvador Pacific coast).
- Australia – Floods (ERCC) – As of 27 May, five fatalities, one still missing person, approximately 700 displaced people, 765 rescued people and a total of around 50,000 affected people across the Hunter Valley, the Central Coast, and Mid-North Coast regions, where the worst affected towns are Taree, Wingham, and Glenthorne.
Health
- US measles total reaches 1,046 cases – Texas and New Mexico report more outbreak cases as other states raise alerts about exposures linked to new illnesses. Of the people infected, 96% were unvaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status.
- Togo reports mpox outbreak as activity escalates in West Africa -Togo’s outbreak brings Africa’s number of affected countries to 25, amid exponential spread in Sierra Leone.
Humanitarian
- Gaza suffering goes on amid intensifying Israeli strikes (UN News) – After another deadly weekend of Israeli attacks in Gaza, aid teams stressed once again on Monday that the “trickle” of supplies being allowed into the war-torn enclave will not halt famine.
