World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

Environment 

  • Paraguay – Severe weather (ERCC) – As of 29 May, one person died due to a lighting-related incident in Eusebio Ayala city in the southern Cordillera department. In addition, several roads have been flooded in the city. 
  • Mexico – Floods (ERCC) – As at 27 May, according to media reports, one person has been confirmed killed by the floods. In addition, the storms have brought down trees, swept cars away, and caused power outages and infrastructure damage. In response to the emergency, the Mexican army, National. 
  • Switzerland – Landslide (ERCC) – As of 29 May, one person is missing, and the village has been partially destroyed and submerged by the debris. At least 300 residents and livestock were preventively evacuated on 19 May due to the glacier instability. The landslide blocked the Lonza, consequently increasing the risk of flooding due to the rising water level in the upper basin. 

Health 

  • WHO warns of rising COVID activity in 3 global regions (CIDRAP) – Global SARS-CoV-2 activity has been increasing, with the test positivity rate reaching 11%, levels that have not been observed since July 2024. The increase in activity is seen in the Western Pacific, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Mediterranean regions, while countries in the African Region, European Region, and the Region of the Americas are currently reporting low levels of SARS-CoV-2 activity, with positivity rates ranging from 2% to 3%.  
  • Cambodia logs fourth fatal H5N1 avian flu case of the year (CIDRAP) – Cambodia’s ministry of health has reported its fourth fatal human H5N1 avian flu case of the year, which involves an 11-year-old boy from Kampong Speu province in the south central part of the country, according to an official Facebook statement translated and posted by Avian Flu Diary, an infectious disease news blog.
