International travel introduces unique risks to both personal and university data and devices, and it is essential to take proactive steps to protect them. Review the International Travel Standard, which outlines responsibilities and recommendations to protect university data and devices. Below are some highlights.
Before your Trip
- Obtain travel authorization and register your trip.
- Review travel advisories and inform trusted others of your itinerary.
- Avoid traveling with University Information Systems unless necessary.
- Request a loaner laptop – especially if traveling to high-risk regions or working with export-controlled data.
- Back up your data and remove unnecessary content from devices.
During your Trip
- Keep devices secure and avoid using public/shared computers.
- Do not connect untrusted accessories or click on suspicious links. Share any concerns with infosecurity@utdallas.edu
- Use reputable internet providers and Wi-Fi connections.
- Remain alert to your surroundings for your safety and to avoid eavesdropping.
- Report any lost or stolen university equipment to local authorities and to On Call International 24/7 at 1 972 651 9722.
After your Trip
- Change all passwords used during travel.
- If you visited a high-risk region, coordinate with IT to restore university devices to a secure state.
