Security
- Opposition accuses CAR government of organizing violent protests that left two dead (Africa News) – After violent protests in Bangui blocked an opposition party meeting on Saturday, leaving two people dead, the Republican Bloc for the Defense of the Constitution, or BRDC, is pointing the finger at the ruling United Heart Movement (MCU). They’re accusing officials of organizing the violence that disrupted the event at a football stadium in the capital.
- Israeli strikes target Syria’s Latakia, Tartous (Reuters) – Israeli strikes targeted Syria’s coastal cities of Latakia and Tartous, killing one person, the Syrian state news agency reported on Friday, despite recent talks between Israel and Syria’s interim government.
- Lebanon says one killed in Israeli strike on south (Arab News) – Lebanon’s health ministry said an Israeli strike on the south of the country Sunday killed one person, the third deadly raid in four days despite a ceasefire with Hezbollah.
- Gaza ministry says Israel kills more than 30 aid seekers (Reuters) – More than 30 Palestinians were killed and nearly 170 injured on Sunday in south Gaza near a food distribution site, the health ministry said, as witnesses reported Israeli soldiers fired on people trying to collect aid and Israel denied it.
Demonstrations
- 2 dead, hundreds arrested in France in Champions League celebrations (Politico) – The ministry said 192 people were injured in overnight violence and more than 550 people arrested, including 490 in Paris. In the southwest town of Dax, a 17-year-old boy died after being stabbed in the chest late on Saturday evening, local media reported. A 23-year-old man who was riding a scooter in central Paris was killed after being hit by a vehicle, the prosecutor’s office said.
Environment
- India – Floods (ERCC) – Media reported at least 34 casualties as of 2 June. Thousands of people have been evacuated and are currently housed in relief camps, with armed forces and disaster response teams deployed in the worst-affected areas to provide aid and assistance.
- Nigeria – Floods (ERCC) – Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall between 29 and 30 May have caused severe suffering and destruction in Mokwa, a market town located in the north-central Niger State. Provisional information indicate that more than 150 people have been killed and over 200 people have been injured. More than 500 houses have been submerged, displacing over 3,000 people.
