Security

GOV.AU reports that terrorists remain active in the Mozambique, after the attack in Palma in Cabo Delgado, and that attacks on other towns are possible especially in areas frequented by foreigners.  GOV.AU warns on potential demonstrations before or after the second round of general elections in EcuadorUN News reports on 58 women and children recently released out of the more than 600 that were abducted las year during intercommunal fighting in South Sudan.

Natural Disasters

The European Emergency Response Coordination Center reports on the Tropical Cyclone SEROJA and its impact in Timor-Leste and Indonesia, causing over 200 fatalities, near 100 people missing, and thousands of people displaced. The cyclone is expected to hit Australia in April 10-11.  Severe weather is also reported in Bangladesh and Haiti last week, with several fatalities and damage to houses and crops.

COVID-19

International preventative measures against COVID-19, including entry restrictions and in-country mobility remain very fluid, and can be imposed without prior notice. Details for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, and Australia

As notable cases: GOVT.NZ reports that from 19 April, people can travel from Australia to New Zealand without having to enter a managed isolation facility when they arrive. CNN reports that in the UK the proposal to use vaccine certification to open society continues to generate controversy due to the ethical issues it raises.  CNN reports that India has imposed a night curfew in the union territory of Delhi to control rising cases.

Globally, as of 06 April, Johns Hopkins University counts 131,907,441 COVID-19 cases and 2,862,885 deaths, and the WHO COVID-19 dashboard reports as of 06 April 131,309,792 cases and 2,854,276 deaths. 

As notable cases: CNN reports the B.1.1.7 variant has now been reported in all 50 states in the United States. Reuters reports Spain’s coronavirus infection rate has risen from 151.8 cases per 100,000 to 163.4 cases per 100,000, as measured over the rolling 14-day average.

Vaccinations campaigns around the world continue.  As of 05 April, Our World in Data reports over 677 million administered vaccine doses globally. The WHO COVID-19 dashboard as of 05 April reports over 604 million administered vaccine doses.

As notable cases: CNN reports Australia is not reaching its vaccination goals due to supply issues. Reuters reports South Africa has signed an agreement to buy 20 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, boosting plans to ramp up vaccinations from this month. WaPo reports the United States vaccinated a record 4 million people on Saturday.
