The travel advisories for Iraq and Iran from the U.S., Canada, the UK, and New Zealand report:

On 3 January 2020, an Iranian military commander and Iraqi paramilitary leaders were killed in a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad International Airport. On 8 January, Iran fired missiles against two military bases in Iraq containing U.S personnel. Iranian authorities have also acknowledged responsibility for the shooting down of a Ukrainian International Airlines flight shortly after take-off from Tehran on 8 January.

Canada and the UK have increased their risk level for Iran. In Iraq the U.S. Consulate General Erbil remains open and continues to provide consular services.  The U.S. Consulate in Barash has suspended operations and has not reopened. Due to security concerns, U.S. Embassy personnel in Baghdad have been instructed not to use Baghdad International Airport.

The incident has led to increased tensions in the region. The security situation is unpredictable and may become increasingly volatile. There is an increased threat of terrorist attacks. Violent demonstrations could occur. The security situation could worsen with little warning. Some airlines have cancelled flights to Iran. If tensions escalate, options to leave Iran may be limited.

If despite the strong do not travel recommendations from these advisories, you determine to travel to these destinations:

  • Contact your airline to see if the situation will disrupt your travel plans.
  • Remain vigilant and exercise a high degree of personal security awareness at all times;
  • Limit your movements;
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities;
  • Monitor local media;
  • Review your security measures;
  • Avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings;
  • Keep in close contact with family and friends;
  • Keep away from military sites.
