This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- Russia risks becoming a failed state in the next 10 years, analysts say (CNBC). Russia as we know it may not survive the coming decade and risks becoming a failed state as it pursues its costly war in Ukraine, according to a survey of global strategists and analysts.
Demonstrations
- Protesters in Dhaka demand justice for Bangladeshi youth shot dead by police in US (bdnews24). A human-chain protest demanded justice over the shooting death of Bangladeshi expatriate student Sayed Arif Faisal in the US during an American official’s visit to Dhaka. The demonstration started at noon on Monday in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- The deadliest day of anti-government protests in Peru (Reuters). Monday was the deadliest day so far of protests in Peru demanding early elections and the release of jailed former president Pedro Castillo.
Infrastructure
- China’s Covid wave threatens another snarl of US medical supply chain (NBC) As Covid infections surge across China, the U.S. again risks falling short of medical supplies as that country struggles to keep factories running and goods flowing out of its ports.
- The government of the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand announced that two hotels in the city of Joshimath will be demolished (PTI) because their foundations are unstable. The city is slowly sinking, causing many buildings to tilt and develop large cracks.
Natural Disasters
- Strong wind, heavy rainfall and heavy snowfall have been affecting the Corsica Island (ERCC), causing some severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in casualties.
- 7.6 quake damages buildings in Indonesia, felt in Australia (AP News). A powerful deep-sea earthquake damaged village buildings in a lightly populated island chain in eastern Indonesia early Tuesday and was widely felt in northern Australia.
Health
- Japan continues to report daily record highs for COVID deaths, averaging more than 400 per day, with seniors among the hardest-hit group (NHK World-Japan). Sunday’s count was down slightly from the figure for recent days. But experts warn the situation could get worse in the coming weeks.
- 90% of people in China province infected with Covid, says local health official (The Guardian) Almost 90% of people in China’s third most populous province have now been infected with Covid-19, a top local official has said, as the country battles an unprecedented surge in cases.
- The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) recently reported 12 more highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu detections in mammals (CIDRAP), including skunks, bears, a raccoon, and a red fox.
- Malawi Appeals to Private Sector for Support in the Fight Against Cholera (All Africa). Through the Office of the President & Cabinet, the Presidential Taskforce on Coronavirus and Cholera is appealing to the public, private corporate companies and organizations for support in the fight against nationwide cholera outbreak.
Traveler mobility
- China suspends short-term visas for Japanese and South Koreans (SCMP), countries that imposed entry restrictions on Chinese travelers.
