This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security
- Three peacekeepers in Mali were killed and five others seriously injured when their vehicle hit an explosive device (UN News), the UN Mission in the country, MINUSMA, reported on Tuesday. MINUSMA is one of the most dangerous peace operations for “blue helmets”. Since its establishment in 2013, 168 peacekeepers have lost their lives in hostile acts.
- Israeli-Palestinian parties must urgently rein in escalating violence and work towards realizing the two-State solution, top UN officials in the region warned the Security Council on Monday (UN News). “We are witnessing a surge in violence, including some of the deadliest incidents in nearly 20 years,” said Tor Wennesland, Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process.
- 17 migrants dead, 13 hurt, in bus crash in central Mexico (AP News). At least 17 migrants are dead after the bus they were traveling in crashed in the central Mexican state of Puebla, officials said Monday. The accident occurred Sunday on a highway leading from the southern state of Oaxaca.
- President Vladimir Putin delivered a nuclear warning to the West over Ukraine (Reuters), suspending a bilateral nuclear arms control treaty, announcing new strategic systems had been put on combat duty and warning that Moscow could resume nuclear tests.
Demonstrations
- Suriname: More arrests expected after antigovernment riots (AP News). Suriname’s government warned of more arrests and put police on high alert Saturday a day after a protest against the policies of President Chandrikapersad Santokhi spun out of control and hundreds of demonstrators stormed parliament.
Natural Disasters
- A landslide occurred in Iligan City in the Philippines on 17 February (ERCC) due to continuous downpours of heavy rain,due to a low pressure weather system that entered the country on 13 February. At least 40 families (200 individuals) were pre-emptively evacuated.
- The number of casualties is increasing following heavy rainfall and consequent floods and landslides across São Paulo State in Brazil (ERCC). According to local authorities, 40 people have died, 23 have been injured, and more than 2,400 have been displaced.
- Heavy rainfall has been affecting most of South Africa since 17 February (ERCC), causing floods and rivers overflow that have resulted in casualties and damage.
- Another earthquake of 6.3 M occurred in southern Türkiye very close to the border with north-western Syria on 20 Feb (ERCC). According to AFAD, in Türkiye six people have died, and almost 300 others have been injured. National authorities provided 6,000 tents for the people affected in the area of the earthquake.
- Heavy Rains Forecast for Cyclone-Hit Areas of New Zealand (U.S. News & World Report). Parts of cyclone-stricken New Zealand could see heavy rains from Thursday as relief and recovery efforts continue and tens of thousands remain without power after Cyclone Gabrielle tore across the country’s North Island last week.
Health
- Nipah virus outbreak in Bangladesh grows to 11 cases, 8 deaths (CIDRAP). Cases include 10 lab-confirmed infections and 1 probable case involving a man who died before samples could be collected.
- Kenya: Unease As Dangerous Mosquito Vector Detected in the Country (AllAfrica) Kenya Medical Research Inistitute (KEMRI) researchers have detected a new dangerous mosquito vector dubbed ‘Anopheles Stephensi’ that thrives in urban and rural areas. KEMRI Acting Director General Sam Kariuki has raised concern that the new mosquito vector might reverse the gains made in eradicating Malaria as it spreads very fast and adapts to different climatic regions.
