This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- Scores Killed in Cameroon’s Battles with Separatists Ahead of Senate Elections (Voice of America). Cameroon’s military says it has killed scores of armed separatists in clashes this month and at least 15 have surrendered. The rebels, who vowed to disrupt March senate elections in Cameroon’s western regions, claim to have killed scores of government troops.
- Somali security forces end al-Shabab siege that killed 10 (ABC). Security forces in Somalia have ended a siege by al-Shabab extremists that killed 10 people and wounded three others at a home in the capital, Mogadishu
- Exclusive: Rocket strike in Damascus hit Iranian military experts, sources say (Reuters). A rocket attack in Damascus on Sunday that Syria blamed on Israel hit an installation where Iranian officials were meeting to advance programmes to develop drone or missile capabilities of Tehran’s allies in Syria, sources told Reuters.
- 10 Palestinians killed, scores hurt in Israel West Bank raid (AP). Israeli troops on Wednesday entered a major Palestinian city in the occupied West Bank in a rare, daytime arrest operation, triggering fighting that killed at least 10 Palestinians and wounded scores of others.
- Bangladesh shuts down main opposition newspaper (The Guardian). Campaigners fear media crackdown under PM Sheikh Hasina after suspension order upheld The only newspaper of Bangladesh’s main opposition party has stopped publishing after a government suspension order was upheld.
- Honduras extends, expands state of emergency for second time (Reuters). The Honduran government extended its state of emergency for a second time on Tuesday, while also expanding it to cover a growing portion of the Central American country, as part of leftist President Xiomara Castro’s crackdown on gangs.
Demonstrations
- Guatemalans protest ban on leftist presidential candidate (AP News). Thousands of people demonstrated in Guatemala Tuesday to protest a court’s decision not to allow an indigenous candidate to register for the country’s June 25 presidential elections.
- London Underground drivers to strike on 15 March (BBC). In the United Kingdom, the train drivers’ union said the dispute was over a failure to accept that changes to working arrangements and pensions should happen by agreement.
Infrastructure
- Cuba suffers third major blackout in a week (Reuters). Cuba on Tuesday suffered its third major blackout in little more than a week, leaving a vast swath of the center and east of the island without power, energy officials said on state-run TV.
Natural Disasters
- The situation in São Paulo State in Brazil is worsening (ERCC) following heavy rainfall and consequent floods and landslides that are affecting the country over the past few days.
- Following the 6.3 M earthquake occurred on 20 February in southern Türkiye (ERCC), very close to the border with north-western Syria, the number of casualties is increasing.
- Heavy rainfall has been affecting central Indonesia (in particular Java Island) since 19 February (ERCC), causing floods that have resulted in evacuations and damage.
