This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- Russian forces pressed attacks in eastern Ukraine with air strikes and artillery attacks (Reuters), with several cities in the Donetsk region under bombardment. Ukrainian forces repelled several attacks, Kyiv said, as the Russian military kept up its effort to take control of Bakhmut.
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would leave Defence Minister Yoav Gallant in place given an escalating security crisis (Reuters), reversing a decision to fire the minister that triggered protests and raised alarm abroad.
- In an attempt to rein in the increasing number of women defying Iran’s compulsory dress code (Reuters), authorities are installing cameras in public places and thoroughfares to identify and penalize unveiled women, the police announced.
- Bangladesh Shopping District Fire Incites Calls for Action (Yahoo). The Bangabazar shopping area in the capital city of Dhaka was completely razed last Tuesday, leaving many to wonder how the disaster could have been prevented.
Demonstrations
- Junior doctors in Britain began a four-day strike (Reuters) that is likely to cause unprecedented disruption to the health service, prompting the government to warn of a risk to patient safety. Tens of thousands of junior doctors are striking for pay rises better aligned with inflation.
Mobility restrictions
- Authorities impose restrictions on nightlife in Amhara over protests (Africa News). Restrictions on nightlife and meetings were imposed Monday in three major cities in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, including the most populous, Gondar, in the wake of protests against the dismantling of regional military forces across Ethiopia.
Natural Disasters
- Heavy rainfall in Ecuador has affected more than 58,700 people across 173 Cantons (ERCC). The Guayas Province is one of the worst hit with 28,200 affected people. Other affected Provinces are Manabí, Los Ríos, Santa Elena, Cotopaxi, El Oro, Santo Domingo de Los Tsáchilas, Imbabura and Chimborazo.
- Areas in southern, central and western Yemen have been affected by torrential rainfall in early April (ERCC), causing floods and resulting in casualties and damage. This is the second time in a month that Yemen is hit by floods, affecting the already vulnerable population of Yemen. In mid-March, IDP-hosting sites in Marib Governorate were affected by floods.
- Tornadoes, strong winds, hailstorms, thunderstorms and heavy rainfall affected both the North Island and the South Island of New Zealand on 9-10 April (ERCC), causing several severe weather-related incidents (particularly due to tornadoes) that have resulted in damage.
- On 11 April, a wildfire fanned by strong winds consumed over 170 hectares of land in the coastal city of Gangneung in the Gangwon-do Province in north-eastern South Korea (ERCC), resulting in evacuations and damage.
Health
- H5N1 avian flu strikes condors in Arizona, more detections reported in pet cats (CIDRAP). Three condors were found dead from confirmed H5N1 infections, and five others showed symptoms, including neurological problems.
