Environment

  • Sri Lanka – Severe weather, floods and landslides, update (ERCC). The number of casualties is increasing following heavy rainfall and strong winds that caused floods, landslides and severe weather-related incidents across most parts of the country.
  • Paraguay – Severe weather and floods (ERCC). Over the past few days, Paraguay has experienced heavy rainfall and widespread floods leading to casualties and damage.
  • Kenya – Floods (ERCC). Since the middle October, heavy rainfall has been hitting most ok Kenya causing flooding across the country. Areas of particular concern include Mandera, Garissa, Wajir, and Tana River and parts of the upper eastern areas of the country.
  • Somalia – Floods, update (ERCC). Over the past week, many areas of the Bay and Bakool regions received more rainfall in seven days than that expected amount for the complete three-months rainy season. Heavy rains, flash and riverine floods have temporarily affected over 1.17 million people and displaced over 334,800. At least 28 people died as a direct consequence, including at least 8 children. Nearly half a million of those affected are in South West State. Dozens dead and thousands trapped in Somalia’s ‘worst floods in decades’ (Al Jazeera). Somalis are struggling to cope with never-before-seen flooding that has killed dozens of people and forced hundreds of thousands to abandon their homes, in the wake of extreme rainfall that has engulfed much of East Africa.
  • Honduras – Severe weather and floods, update (ERCC). The amount of casualties and impacted people continues to increase following heavy rain, strong winds and floods that have been affecting most parts of Honduras since the beginning of November.

Health

  • South Sudan – Severe food insecurity (ERCC). The latest IPC acute food insecurity and malnutrition analysis shows that with 7.1 million people projected to be in crisis level of food insecurity in March–June 2024, South Sudan remains the country with the highest proportion of its population suffering from severe food insecurity (56.3%) globally. This figure includes 79,000 people in catastrophic level of acute food insecurity (IPC 5).
  • Risk of disease spread soars in Gaza as health facilities, water and sanitation systems disrupted (WHO). As deaths and injuries in Gaza continue to rise due to intensified hostilities, intense overcrowding and disrupted health, water, and sanitation systems pose an added danger: the rapid spread of infectious diseases. Some worrying trends are already emerging. Health officials are already seeing spikes in diarrheal illnesses, upper respiratory infections, and skin conditions.
