World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United StatesCanada, the UKNew Zealand, and Australia, and the CDCECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Environment

  • Mexico – Volcanic eruption (ERCC). Popocatépetl volcano, located in the States of Puebla, Morelos, and Mexico, central Mexico erupted on 27 February and the ash plume reached up to 2,000 m above the crater. 
  • Indonesia – Floods and landslide, update (ERCC). Over the past few days, heavy rainfall has been affecting Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan Islands, causing floods and resulting in displacement and damage. 
  • Bolivia – Severe weather (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting a number of Departments of Bolivia, in particular the La Paz and Pando Departments since November 2023, causing floods, rivers overflow and a number of severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage. 
  • Brazil – Floods (ERCC). Heavy rainfall has been affecting western Brazil, in particular the Acre State, bordering with Peru and Bolivia since 25 February, causing floods and rivers overflow, that have resulted in population evacuation and damage. 
  • Italy – Severe weather. Heavy rainfall, snow and strong winds have been affecting most parts of northern and central Italy, causing floods, triggering landslides, and resulting in damage. 
  • Aruba issues alert after oil spill reached neighboring Bonaire (Reuters). The Caribbean island of Aruba issued an alert on Tuesday after an oil spill that was first spotted near Tobago spread to neighboring Bonaire, threatening its mangrove forests and national parks.
