World Status Report

March 14, 2024

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United StatesCanada, the UKNew Zealand, and Australia, and the CDCECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Israeli forces kill three Palestinians in West Bank (Reuters).  Israeli forces shot dead three Palestinians in two separate incidents in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, bringing to six the number of Palestinians killed within hours in the Palestinian territory. 
  • Sudan’s army claims control of national broadcast building (Reuters). Sudan’s army said it had taken control of the state broadcast headquarters from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Tuesday in what would be its most significant advance against its paramilitary rival in nearly 11 months of war. 
  • After prime minister pledges to step down, uneasy quiet in Haiti capital (Reuters). Uncertainty hung over Haiti’s political future on Tuesday after its prime minister said he would step down, a move welcomed by many Haitians exhausted by months of escalating gang violence, but with questions over security still not settled. 
  • Syria (UN News). Syria is experiencing a wave of violence not seen in years. Since the start of the Gaza war, tensions have increased between some of the six foreign armies active in Syria, UN Syria commissioners said, notably Israel, Iran and the US – all raising concerns of a wider conflict.
