World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Environment 

  • Uganda – Floods (ERCC) – As of 9 September, two fatalities, 1,469 households affected in 13 villages and more than 120 homes have been damaged or destroyed, leaving hundreds of families without shelter 
  • Morocco, Algeria – Floods, update (ERCC) – As of 10 September, 18 fatalities and four still missing persons across the the aforementioned affected provinces. In addition, media also reports 56 destroyed houses and 110 damaged roads throughout the affected area. Moreover, in Algeria, five fatalities were reported across the Béchar province, western Algeria, bordering with eastern Morocco.

  • Gaza war continues to shut hundreds of thousands out of class (UN News)Monday would have marked the start of the new school year in Gaza.Almost 625,000 children in the enclave have already lost an entire school year following the 7 October 2023 terror attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups on communities in southern Israel and the ensuing Israeli military operation in Gaza.They are now joined by more than 45,000 six-year-old children poised to enter first grade, elevating the risk of a second year without any classroom education.
  • Use of cluster bombs threatens global ban (UN News) – Cluster bomblets continue to kill thousands of civilians, mostly children, and the new use of this predominantly outlawed class of weapons is threatening efforts to universally ban them, according to a new report published on Monday.
