World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Lebanon crisis: over one million people flee strikes amid invasion fears (UN News) – More than one million people across Lebanon have been uprooted by ongoing and deadly Israeli airstrikes across the country, including one reported early Monday morning in a residential area of central Beirut, adding to fears of a full-scale invasion.  
  • Russia targets 11 Ukrainian regions as it steps up its drone attacks (AP News) – Russia fired missiles and drones at 11 regions of Ukraine, the Ukrainian air force said Monday, in a 33rd consecutive night of aerial attacks behind the front line and set a new monthly record of drone barrages. In Kyiv, multiple explosions and machine gun fire could be heard throughout the night as the Ukrainian capital’s air defenses fought off a drone attack for five hours. 
  • At least six killed by bomb blasts in Somalia (Reuters) – At six people were killed and 10 injured on Saturday by bomb explosions in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu and a town in the country’s Middle Shabelle region, police and witnesses said. It was not immediately clear who had carried out the attacks, although Islamist militant group al Shabaab frequently orchestrates bombings and gun attacks in Mogadishu and elsewhere in the Horn of Africa country. The blast in Mogadishu involved a bomb-rigged car that was parked on a road near the National Theatre in Mogadishu, about one kilometre away from the president’s office. 

Infrastructure 

  • Uganda – Sudanese refugees (ERCC) – Since the start of the conflict in Sudan in April 2023, more than 55,000 Sudanese refugees have fled to Uganda – including 36,000 individuals since January 2024. Sudanese refugees are currently the largest group amongst new arrivals to Uganda this year with an average arrival rate of 4,500 persons per month. The steady influx is happening in a fast-evolving humanitarian situation where the country operation experiences gaps in resources and needs additional support in order to continue providing an effective response. 

Environment 

  • Indonesia – Landslide (ERCC) – A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall occurred in Solok Regency in West Sumatra Province, in Sumatra Island, western Indonesia on 26 September at 10.00 UTC, causing casualties and damage. According to the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) and media reports, as of 30 September, at least 15 people died, two are still missing, three have been injured, and 25 have been affected in a mine near Nagari Sungai Abu village in Hiliran Gumanti District. 
  • Nepal – Floods and landslides (ERCC) – The death toll and damage caused by heavy rain that has resulted in flooding and landslides in central and western Nepal is increasing. According to media, as of 30 September, at least 193 people died, including 34 in the capital Kathmandu, 31 are still missing, and 96 have been injured. In addition, three highways have been blocked by landslides isolating Kathmandu, and schools have been closed. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing. 
  • Greece – Wildfire (ERCC) – A wildfire has been burning near Rozena village in Corinthia region, Northern Peloponnese since 29 September, causing casualties and damage. According to the JRC European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the wildfire has burnt an area of approximately 6,085 hectares. As of 30 September, media report two fatalities near Elliniko village, two injured firefighters, and five evacuated villages, including Pyrgos, Elliniko and Kallithea. National authorities have deployed 330 firefighters, 11 ground teams, 110 vehicles, 14 planes and 10 helicopters. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated in rapid mapping mode on 29 September to provide initial rough estimation, fire extent and damage assessment. 

Health 

  • Rwanda – Outbreak of Marburg virus (ERCC) – On 27 September, the authorities in Rwanda confirmed the spread of the Marburg virus in the country. Cases of the virus have been reported in seven of the country’s 30 districts. As of 29 September, there were 26 confirmed cases with eight fatalities and the remainder in isolation. Contact tracing is ongoing. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Marburg virus disease is highly virulent and causes haemorrhagic fever, with a fatality ratio of up to 88%. It is in the same family as the virus that causes Ebola virus disease. Illness caused by Marburg virus begins abruptly, with high fever, severe headache and severe malaise.
