Security
- Two predawn explosions rock the area around the Israeli Embassy in Copenhagen (AP News) – Three young Swedes were arrested Wednesday in connection with two predawn explosions that occurred in the vicinity of the Israeli Embassy in Copenhagen, prompting a nearby Jewish school to close for the day. Police said no one was injured. The explosions were about 100 meters (yards) from the embassy, which is located in an area with other embassies. It caused damage to another building, but Jespersen did not describe the nature of the damage.
- Russia captures Vuhledar after two years of Ukrainian resistance (Reuters) – Russian troops on Wednesday took charge of the eastern Ukrainian town of Vuhledar, a bastion that had resisted intense attacks since Russia launched its full-scale assault in 2022. The advance of Moscow’s forces, which control just under a fifth of Ukraine, has underlined Russia’s vast superiority in men and materiel as Ukraine pleads for more weapons from the Western allies that have been supporting it.
- Japan airport shut after likely WW2-era bomb explodes near runway, 87 flights cancelled (Reuters) – A regional airport in southwest Japan was closed on Wednesday after a U.S. bombshell, likely dropped during World War Two to stem “kamikaze” attacks, exploded near its runway, causing nearly 90 flight cancellations. Miyazaki Airport shut its runway after the explosion caused a crater seven metres (23 feet) wide and one metre (3.2 feet) deep in the middle of the taxiway next to the runway, according to a Japanese transport ministry official.
Environment
- Vietnam – Floods and landslides (ERCC) – Since 28-29 September, heavy rainfall has affected Ha Giang province in northern Vietnam, causing widespread flooding and landslides, that resulted to casualties and damage.
- Iran – Flash floods (ERCC) – On 30 September, heavy rains in the southern Iranian province of Kerman caused flash floods, resulting in casualties and damage.
Health
- WHO: cases at border and capital among Marburg concerns in Rwanda (CIDRAP) – The majority of people infected in Rwanda’s Marburg virus outbreak are health workers, and some illnesses have been reported in districts that border three other African nations, both of which are among a number of concerning features of the event, the World Health Organization (WHO) said yesterday in its initial risk assessment. The source of the Marburg virus outbreak—Rwanda’s first—still isn’t known, pending further investigation findings by Rwandan health officials, the WHO said. Rwanda’s health ministry today reported 2 more confirmed cases and 1 more death, raising the outbreak total to 29 cases, 10 of them fatal. The outbreak is already one of the biggest involving Marburg virus, a close cousin of Ebola.
- Study provides novel insights on sepsis in India (CIDRAP) – A study conducted in southern India found that sepsis disproportionately affects younger and mostly rural groups and that gram-negative bacteria, viruses, and tropical diseases are significant causes, researchers reported today in Clinical Infectious Diseases. India accounts for 26% of global sepsis-related deaths.
