World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Infrastructure 

  • North Gaza hospitals say food, medicines running out as Israel presses offensive (Reuters) – Palestinian health officials called on Wednesday for a humanitarian corridor to three hospitals in northern Gaza that have come close to collapse as Israeli troops have cut off the area during almost two weeks of heavy fighting against Hamas.
  • Fire kills 104 people after fuel tanker crash in Nigeria (BBC) – A fuel tanker exploded overnight in northern Nigeria killing at least 104 people who rushed to the scene of the accident to collect leaking petrol. The fire engulfed the overturned vehicle, which had been cordoned off by officers after it crashed, the police told the BBC. A hundred other people injured in the explosion have been taken to hospital in the nearby town of Ringim in Jigawa state, many of them are in a critical condition.  

Environment 

  • Sierra Leone – Floods (ERCC) – According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), as of 8 October, 716 people have been displaced due to the overflow of the Bumbuna dam in Bumbuna town, in the central of Tonkolili District (Northern province), and 23,596 people have been affected floods across Bo, Bonthe, Bombali, Falaba, Kambia, Moyamba, Tonkolili, Port Loko, Pujehun, and the Western Area districts, the worst affected areas. In addition, 167 houses, including schools and hospitals, have been destroyed, and 7,374 ha of crops have been flooded. 
  • Ethiopia – Heavy rain in Oromia (ERCC) – Heavy rains at the end of September in West Guji, Oromia have particularly hit three districts (Qarca, Hamballa and Bule) where 5,226 households (38,628 people) have been impacted. Over 4,460  ha of cropland have been damaged. In West Hararge Zone, at least 22 people have lost their lives in a landslide that occurred on 9 October, that also left three people missing and 72 people wounded in its wake. Property and cropland have been destroyed too. It is estimated that 604 households (2,584 people) have been affected. Search and rescue operations continue to find survivors.
