World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Uganda – Level 3: Reconsider Travel (DOS) – Updated to reflect information on public demonstrations. Reconsider travel to Uganda due to crime, terrorism, and anti-LGBTQI+ laws and environment. Exercise increased caution due to potential risks and the unpredictable nature of public demonstrations.  
  • Militants kill seven, including six migrant workers, in India’s Kashmir (Reuters) – At least six migrant workers and a doctor were shot dead in India’s Kashmir region on Sunday night when militants opened fire near a tunnel construction site, officials said, days after a new government was formed in the territory. 
  • Syria – Increasing conflict and displacement (ERCC) – Over the past two weeks, an increase in hostilities has been reported in Northwest Syria, leading to an initial displacement of some 7,000 people from several frontline communities. Russia’s air force launched a series of 122 airstrikes in the region of Idleb throughout the last week, which resulted in the deaths of at least 12 civilians, including children. 
  • Haiti – Simultaneous attacks on civilians’ prompt forced displacement (ERCC) – On 17 October, a national day commemorating the assassination of General Dessalines the father of the nation, criminal gangs launched a series of coordinated attacks in several neighborhood of Port-au-Prince disrupting official celebrations, burning houses and a church and looting shops and homes. Attacks on civilians and destructions continue since 18 October in Solino, a neighborhood north-west of the capital, killing at least one woman and forcibly displacing an unspecified number of people. 
  • Russia hits Kyiv with drone attacks for second night in a row (Reuters) –   Russia attacked the Ukrainian capital Kyiv with several waves of drones for the second night in a row, damaging residential buildings and injuring at least one civilian, Ukrainian officials said on Monday. Two civilian were killed and 15 were injured in a separate ballistic missile attack on Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine on Monday morning, local authorities said. 
  • Israel ‘demolished’ watchtower in latest attack on UN Lebanon peacekeepers (Al Jazeera) – United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon have said the Israeli army “deliberately” damaged one of their positions in southern Lebanon, in the latest incident reported by the force that remains deployed in all of its positions.
