Security
- Bolivia – Social unrest (ERCC) – On 27 October, Bolivia’s former President Evo Morales claimed that shots were fired at his vehicle in an assassination attempt. Morales blamed President Arce’s government for the outburst of violence ahead of next year’s elections. At least 44 protesters were arrested on 25 October when more than 1,700 police officers were deployed to dismantle the roadblocks.
- Palestinians say 100,000 residents trapped in Israel’s north Gaza offensive (Reuters). Israeli tanks thrust deeper on Monday into two north Gaza towns and a historic refugee camp, trapping around 100,000 civilians, the Palestinian emergency service said, in what the military said were operations to eliminate regrouping Hamas militants.
- Israeli campaign leaves Lebanese border towns in ruins, satellite images show (Reuters). After nearly a year of exchanging fire across the border, Israel intensified its strikes on southern Lebanon and beyond over the last month. Israeli troops have made ground incursions all along the mountainous frontier with Lebanon, engaging in heavy clashes with Hezbollah fighters inside some towns.
- UN chief urges halt to escalation after Israeli strikes on Iran (UN News) – The UN Secretary-General on Saturday called for an immediate halt to all escalatory actions in the Middle East, following overnight attacks by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on targets in Iran.
- Sudan: UN official decries attacks against civilians in Al Jazirah state (Un News) – The top UN humanitarian official in Sudan has raised alarm over a sharp escalation of violence in a region near the capital, Khartoum, where recent attacks reportedly carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have claimed more than 120 lives.
Environment
- A Philippine town in the shadow of a volcano is hit by landslides it never expected (AP News) – Talisay, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) south of Manila, was one of several towns ravaged by Tropical Storm Trami, the deadliest of 11 storms to hit the Philippines this year. The storm veered toward Vietnam across the South China Sea after leaving at least 152 people dead and missing. More than 5.9 million people were in the storm’s path in northern and central provinces.
Health
- Mpox-measles co-infections reported in hard-hit DR Congo provinces (CIDRAP) – Mpox activity in Africa continues at a steady pace, and though responders are seeing some promising trends, some countries face new challenges, including a rise in mpox-measles co-infections in children in two Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) provinces, officials from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC)
