Security
- Russian air attacks on Ukraine’s Kharkiv wound at least 15 (Reuters) – Russian forces attacked Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkiv and the surrounding region with guided aerial bombs on Sunday, wounding at least 15 people, Kharkiv Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said. Russia attacked Ukraine with more than 2,000 drones in October (Reuters) – Russia launched more than 2,000 attack drones at civilian and military targets across Ukraine last month, Kyiv’s military said on Friday, as Kremlin forces press a grinding offensive on the front line of their February 2022 invasion. Moscow has carried out regular air strikes on Ukrainian towns and cities, with the capital Kyiv coming under attack 20 times in October alone, according to city officials.
- Gaza polio vaccine campaign under fire (UN News) – Attacks on a clinic and UN staff member were reported during a resumed polio vaccine campaign in besieged northern Gaza, Israeli forces continued airstrikes on Lebanon on Sunday and in Yemen, a new water project launched a “lifeline” for populations fleeing conflict, with updates from Syria.
- Sudan’s RSF and allies sexually abused victims from 8-75 years (Reuters) – Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allies have committed “staggering” levels of sexual abuse, raping civilians as troops advance and abducting some women as sex slaves during the more than 18-month war.
Demonstrations
- Clashes in Mozambique as police disperse election protests (VOA News) – Police in Mozambique fired tear gas and rubber bullets Saturday as they dispersed protests in several cities over a disputed presidential election, according to local sources and AFP reporters. Unrest has rocked the southern African nation since an October 9 election.
- Serbian protesters demand arrests after railway station canopy collapse killed 14 (Euro News) – Protesters have left red handprints at the entrances of government buildings in the Serbian capital Belgrade to demand the arrest of officials just days after a concrete canopy collapsed at a railway station, killing 14 people and injuring three.
Environment
- Indonesia – Volcanic Eruption (ERCC) – as of 4 November, ten people died, and 10,295 have been affected due to ongoing activity and volcanic ash. A shelter has been set up as a result of several houses been burned down. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing.
- Spain – Severe weather and floods, update (ERCC) – as of 4 November, at least 211 people died due to heavy rainfall following a flash flood. Department of National Security of Spain (DSN) reports that about 4,500 buildings across at least 68 municipalities in Valencia province have been affected.
Infrastructure
- Sudan crisis escalates as attacks in Al Jazirah spark mass displacement (UN News) – UN Secretary General António Guterres has strongly condemned escalating attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s Al Jazirah state, as new reports reveal over 135,000 civilians were displaced in just 10 days.
- Heavy rains in Barcelona disrupt rail service as troops search for more flood victims in Valencia (AP News) – The recurrent storms in eastern Spain that led to massive flooding last week and killed over 200 people, mostly near Valencia, dumped rain on Barcelona on Monday, prompting authorities to suspend commuter rail service.
Health
- Famine, Cholera and Dengue fever surge hits war-torn Sudan (UN News) – War in Sudan has devastated towns and cities across the country and pushed the healthcare system to collapse, just as cases of cholera and dengue fever are surging and hunger levels remain above the famine threshold.
- Pakistan shuts primary schools for a week in Lahore due to dangerous air quality (AP News) – Dangerously poor air quality on Monday forced Pakistani authorities in the cultural capital of Lahore to close primary schools for a week, government officials said, after the air-quality index hit a record high over the weekend.
