This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security 

  • 4 security officers and 2 schoolchildren killed in bomb and mortar attacks in northwest Pakistan (AP News) – A roadside bomb exploded near a vehicle carrying security forces in restive northwestern Pakistan, killing four officers and wounding five others, officials said Thursday, and the same day two schoolchildren were killed when a mortar exploded near them elsewhere in the northwest. 
  • Israeli strike in Lebanon’s Sidon kills three citizens said Lebanese army (Reuters) – An Israeli strike on the southern Lebanese city of Sidon killed three Lebanese citizens and wounded three Lebanese soldiers and four Malaysian personnel from UNIFIL forces, the Lebanese army said on Thursday. The strike targeted a car while it was passing a checkpoint, which led to the killing of the three Lebanese who were inside it, the army said in a statement. 
  • Germany arrests U.S. citizen suspected of offering military intel to China (Reuters) – Germany has arrested a U.S. citizen suspected of offering intelligence on the U.S. military to China that he had acquired while working for troops stationed in Germany, the federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement on Thursday. The man, identified only as Martin D. under German privacy law, is accused of having declared himself ready to work as an agent for a foreign intelligence agency, the statement said. 
  • UK lawmaker charged with assault after allegedly punching passerby (Reuters) – A British lawmaker was charged with assault on Thursday after he allegedly punched a passerby who he said had been threatening him after a Friday night out. Mike Amesbury was suspended from the governing Labour Party after CCTV and video footage showed him throwing a punch at a man and repeatedly hitting him after he was knocked to the ground.

  • Cameroon – Landslide (ERCC) – On 5 November, two landslides triggered by heavy rainfall hit the West Region in central-western Cameroon, resulting in casualties and damage. As of 7 November, media reports at least three fatalities, several missing people, several roads affected and one blocked highway in the La Falaise locality, in Dschang city, due to a landslide that occurred during road-clearing operations in response to an earlier landslide. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing. 
  • Philippines – Tropical cyclone YINXING, update (ERCC) – YINXING is moving west and is passing very close to the north-eastern coast of Cagayan province. According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development, 3,253 people have been displaced in Cagayan Valley (of whom 2,714 sheltered in 64 evacuation centers) and 3,275 others have been affected in three provinces of the aforementioned region, Batanes, Cagayan and Isabela. 
  • Cuba left reeling after Category 3 hurricane ravages island and knocks out power grid (AP News) – The magnitude of the impact remained unclear through the early hours of the day, but forecasters warned that Hurricane Rafael could bring “life-threatening” storm surges, winds and flash floods to Cuba after ravaging parts of the Cayman Islands and Jamaica.
