World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Somalia – Conflict (ERCC) – The conflict is driven by political tensions between Somaliland and the autonomous administration, as well as clan disputes. Around 40 fatalities have been reported so far. As a consequence of the fighting, at least 26,550 individuals were forced to displace, mainly pastoralist communities who had to abandon their livestock in the conflict zone. Local health centers report children among wounded and deceased individuals, indicating a risk of increased forced child recruitment and mobilization. 
  • Large airstrikes hit Beirut suburbs as Israel expands northern Gaza operations (AP News) – Several large airstrikes hit Beirut’s southern suburbs early Thursday, including one on a site adjacent to Lebanon’s only international airport. The Israeli military had issued an evacuation notice for the site, saying Hezbollah facilities were there, without giving more details. 
  • 11 Somali soldiers killed in clash with al-Shabab militants (VOA) – The fighting occurred in the vicinity of Wayaanta, about 60 kilometers southwest of Kismayo, Jubaland state, after the government forces attacked a suspected gathering spot for the al-Shabab militants. Three officials with direct knowledge of the fighting who requested not to be identified because they are not allowed to speak with media told VOA Horn of Africa that 11 regional and government soldiers were killed, and more than 20 others injured. 
  • Russia hits Ukraine with missiles, drones, bombs (VOA) – Ukrainian officials say Russia attacked the regions of Odessa, Kharkiv and Kyiv overnight into Friday morning with drones, missiles and aerial bombs, damaging residential buildings and infrastructure and killing at least one person and injuring at least 25. 
  • Mozambique on edge as army is deployed to help stop post-election protests (AP News) – Mozambique has deployed soldiers on the streets to help keep order following weeks of protests against the ruling party has been accused of rigging last month’s election to extend its 49 years in power. 
  • Cyberattacks on healthcare: A global threat (UN News) – An alarming surge in ransomware attacks is putting the world’s healthcare infrastructure at critical risk, endangering patient safety and destabilizing health systems, the head of the UN World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Friday, as the Security Council convened to discuss strategies to counter the growing threat. 

Environment 

  • Costa Rica – Floods and landslides (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall has been affecting Costa Rica since 8 November, causing floods, river overflow and landslides that resulted in casualties and damage. According to media reports, as of 10 November, one child died in Cartago province, central Costa Rica, due to a landslide, and more than 800 people have been displaced in 180 shelters due to floods, some rivers overflowed, and several buildings have been affected.
