World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Children face unprecedented crisis amid rising violence in Haiti (UN News) – This year has seen a staggering 1,000 per cent or ten-fold surge in sexual violence against children in Haiti, during an unprecedented crisis which has seen armed gangs continue to terrorize communities amid a growing humanitarian disaster. Children are being used by armed gangs in Haiti and we are witnessing some recent troubling trends, notably the use of sexual violence, including rape and collective rape, as a weapon of war by gangs. 
  • Zhuhai attack: 35 killed as driver rams into crowd in southern China (Reuters) – A hit-and-run attack at a sports center in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai killed 35 people and severely injured 43, local police said on Tuesday. The incident happened at 7:48 p.m. (1148 GMT) on Monday, when a small off-road vehicle was driven into a large group of people exercising outside the sports center. Zhuhai police said in a statement that the suspect, a 62-year-old man surnamed Fan, was being treated at a hospital after hurting himself with a knife in his car. 
  • Gunmen open fire in a bar in central Mexico killing 10 and injuring 13 (AP News) – The attack took place Saturday in the historic city center of Querétaro in a region that had long been spared the violence seen in neighboring states like Guerrero. In recent years, however, the state of Querétaro has been marked by a handful of violent incidents, raising concern by authorities. 
  • 17 Chadian soldiers and 96 rebels killed in a Boko Haram attack (AP News) – The Lake Chad region has been plagued this year by frequent attacks from insurgents, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa. It has revived fears of violence after a period of peace following a successful operation launched in 2020 by the Chadian army to destroy the extremist groups’ bases.  
  • Israeli airstrikes pound Beirut suburb, no sign of ceasefire (Reuters) – The Israeli military pounded Beirut’s southern suburbs with airstrikes on Tuesday, mounting one of its heaviest daytime attacks yet on the Hezbollah-controlled area after the defense minister ruled out a ceasefire until Israeli goals were met. Smoke billowed over Beirut as around a dozen strikes hit the southern suburbs from mid-morning. An Israeli army warning posted on social media told residents they were near Hezbollah facilities. There were no immediate reports of casualties. 

Environment 

  • Colombia – Severe weather (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall has been affecting north-western Colombia since 7 November. According to the official as of November 11, 187,885 persons (37,577 families) are affected in 25 municipalities of the department of Choco by the floods. The river flooding has devastated infrastructures, including housing and personal belongings: houses are in some cases reportedly completed destroyed. A preliminary assessment report 4,337 houses affected. 

Health 

  • Cameroon – Cholera outbreak (ERCC) – Severe flooding in Cameroon’s Far North region has affected 459,000 people, with the situation worsening due to the ongoing risk of epidemics, particularly cholera. Cholera outbreak confirmed: on 8 November 2024, four patients from the same family were admitted for severe diarrhea at local health centers, with rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) confirming cholera. On 10 November, two cases were confirmed by culture. 
  • Lebanon: food insecurity worsen amid deadly strikes (UN News) – Amid intensifying military operations in Lebanon and deadly attacks on civilians, medical personnel and infrastructure, UN humanitarians warned on Monday that food insecurity in the war-wracked country is set to worsen. Israeli strikes have left more than 3,100 people dead and over 13,800 injured since October last year.
