This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security
- Israeli military blows up buildings in West Bank refugee camp (Reuters) – The Israeli military blew up buildings in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Sunday in an operation that the Palestinian state news agency said leveled around 20 buildings. Footage capturing the demolitions showed a series of simultaneous explosions in the densely populated camp.
- Syria car bomb explosion kills at least 20 (DW). A car bomb went off on a main road on the outskirts of the northern city of Manbij, Syria’s civil defense said. Most of those killed were women, while over a dozen others were injured.
- West Bank violence undermining Gaza ceasefire (UN News) – Escalating hostilities in the occupied West Bank are putting the fragile ceasefire in Gaza at risk, the UN agency that assists Palestine refugees, UNRWA, warned in a statement on Monday. It comes a day after Israeli Security Forces (ISF) carried out a series of controlled detonations at the Jenin refugee camp, located in the northern West Bank, destroying large areas there “in a split second”. UNRWA said it received no prior warning of the explosions “as contact between staff and Israeli authorities is no longer permitted – putting civilian lives at risk.”
- At least one dead after firing incident at UN compound in Kabul (Reuters) – A firing incident at a United Nations compound in Kabul has killed one person and injured another, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a statement on Monday. Guards belonging to the Taliban were involved in the incident and investigations are on, the statement said.
- Helicopter crash in northern Philippines kills its pilot (AP News) – A helicopter crashed in a northern Philippine province, killing its pilot, who was the only person on board after she transported a passenger to a nearby city, Philippine officials said Sunday. The four-seat helicopter owned by a domestic carrier took off from the Philippine capital, Manila, on Saturday for the northern mountain resort city of Baguio, where it dropped off the passenger, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines said.
- Congo health ministry reports on Goma hospital morgues (Reuters). There were 773 bodies in hospital morgues in and around the eastern Congolese city of Goma as of Jan. 30 following this week’s offensive by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s health ministry said on Saturday.
Demonstrations
- Ugandan activists demand release of an opposition leader facing military trial (AP News) – Ugandan opposition leaders on Monday demanded the release of a colleague whose military trial faces a legal challenge after the top court ruled that civilians can’t be court-martialed. Kizza Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate in the East African country, has been in jail since his abduction from the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, where he went missing on Nov. 16.
Environment
- Tunisia – Floods (ERCC) – In the past few days, northern Tunisia experienced heavy rain that caused widespread floods and resulted in casualties and damage. According to media, one person is still missing in the governorate of Nabeul while some people have been evacuated and roads cut off by flood events.
- Peru – Landslide (ERCC) – A mudslide triggered by heavy rainfall occurred on 30 January in the Puno region, resulting in casualties and damage. As of 3 February, two people died, at least one person has been injured, and an undefined number of missing people have been reported in Mucumayo village of the Ituata district, of the Carabaya Province of the northern Puno region.
- Australia – Floods (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall has been affecting Queensland state in north-eastern Australia since 1 February, causing flooding and severe weather-related incidents, that have resulted in casualties and damage. As of 3 February, one person died, and five have been rescued due to a flood-related incident in Ingham town in the Shire of Hinchinbrook, in north-eastern Queensland. In addition, thousands of people have been evacuated, of whom 400 are sheltered in evacuation centres, more than 2,000 houses have been affected, one bridge on a main highway has been damaged, and several power outages have been reported in Townsville, Cardwell and Ingham.
Health
- Eastern DR Congo crisis increasing risk of mpox transmission (UN News) – The worsening security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has forced many mpox patients to flee treatment centres, increasing the risk of transmission, the UN health agency warned on Monday. Fighting escalated sharply in late January, as Rwanda-backed M23 rebels seized control of parts of North Kivu, including areas near the regional capital Goma, and advanced towards South Kivu.
