World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • West Bank security situation remains alarming (UN News) – Weeks of deadly Israeli military raids in the occupied West Bank have turned Palestinian communities into “battlefields” and left 40,000 people homeless, UN humanitarians warned on Wednesday. The violence has seen exchanges of fire between Israeli troops and Palestinian militants. 
  • Sudan military plane crashes in residential area (BBC) – At least 46 people have been killed and 10 others injured after a Sudanese military plane crashed in a residential neighbourhood in Omdurman, the twin city of the capital Khartoum, state media says.  
  • Haiti: Gang violence displaces 6,000 people in one month (UN News) – More than 6,000 people in Haiti have been forced from their homes by gang violence in almost a month, hampering aid efforts by humanitarian agencies, the United Nations warned on Tuesday. Since the end of January, a wave of extreme brutality has led to widespread loss of life and the displacement of over 6,000 people in the capital, Port-au-Prince. 
  • Israeli warplanes strike south of Damascus (Reuters) – Israeli warplanes hit a town south of Syria’s capital as well as the southern province of Daraa late on Tuesday, residents, security sources and local broadcaster Syria TV said. Israeli planes struck the town of Kisweh approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of Damascus, a Syrian security source and Syria TV said. 
  • Murdered businessman’s body found in sack in Kenya (BBC) – Campbell Scott, 58, arrived in Nairobi’s affluent Westlands district for a business trip on 15 February. He was last seen the following night with an unidentified man, having been to a nightclub. 

Infrastructure 

Environment 

  • Afghanistan – Severe weather and flash floods (ERCC) – As of 26 February, media report 21 casualties and six people injured in Farah province due to flash floods and severe weather-related incidents. In addition, eight people died in Kandahar province following severe weather-related incidents. 
  • Algeria – Floods (ERCC) – According to media reports, three people died due to the overflow of a wadi – a river valley that is usually dry, except when heavy rain occurs. 
  • Madagascar – Floods (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall has been affecting central Madagascar over the last 10 days, in particular the Analamanga region. As of 26 February, media report 11 fatalities and several school closures across the Analamanga region. 

Health 

  • Success for polio campaign in Gaza while West Bank tensions continue (UN News) – UN humanitarians reported on Tuesday that aid workers in Gaza supporting local health authorities have now managed to vaccinate nearly 550,000 children under 10 – nearly all those it aimed to reach. As of Monday, the third day of the campaign, some 548,000 children had been inoculated, or 93 per cent of the target population. 

Humanitarian 

  • Somalia faces escalating crisis amid drought, conflict and price hikes (UN News) – The humanitarian situation in Somalia is worsening as drought, conflict and soaring food prices push millions toward extreme hunger, UN agencies warned on Wednesday. New food security assessments indicate that 4.4 million people – nearly a quarter of the population – could face “crisis” levels of food insecurity 

Migration 

  • Conflict has turned parts of Sudan into a hellscape (UN News) – Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has left more than half the country, 24.6 million people, experiencing acute hunger. More than 12 million are now displaced, including 3.4 million who have fled across the border. Health services have collapsed, millions of children are out of school and relentless patterns of sexual violence have occurred.
