World Status Report

February 28, 2025

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers. 

Security 

  • Haiti gangs launch deadly attack on capital’s Delmas neighborhood (Reuters) – Armed gangs launched a fresh attack on Haiti’s capital before dawn on Tuesday, killing residents in the Delmas 30 neighborhood and causing more residents to flee as gangs continue to operate unchecked in the Caribbean nation. 
  • Chad – Fire at refugee site (ERCC) – In Adré, a fire broke out on Sunday 23 January at 13.00 UTC in a temporary refugee site. One 4-year-old child has died, four people have been severely burned and 150 households have been affected.   
  • Israel’s refusal to withdraw from the Philadelphi corridor (AP News), a narrow strip of desert on the Gaza side of the border with Egypt, as called for in the ceasefire with Hamas, could further threaten the fragile truce. There was no immediate comment from Egypt, a key mediator that is also opposed to any Israeli presence on the Gaza side of the border. 
  • 18 dead in a bus crash in eastern Thailand (AP News) – A chartered bus overturned in eastern Thailand early Wednesday morning, killing 18 people and injuring 31, officials said. The accident occurred in Prachinburi province during an overnight journey from northern Thailand to coastal Rayong province for a municipal study tour.  

Infrastructure 

  • Chile – Massive power outage (ERCC) – Since 25 February at 12.00 UTC, a massive power outage has struck a large part of Chile, affecting an estimated 19 million people from Arica to Chiloe. President has declared a state of emergency, installed a curfew and promised a full investigation. Furthermore, 3,000 military personnel have been deployed to maintain order in the affected regions. Access to power has been gradually restored for 4 million of the affected people. 

Environment 

  • Indonesia – Earthquake (ERCC) – An earthquake of 6.1 M at a depth of 10 km occurred in the Molucca Sea, 47 km east of the Minahasa Peninsula of the island of Sulawesi on 25 February at 22:55 UTC. Approximately ten aftershocks of a magnitude between 4.7 and 5.1 M have been recorded in the area. As of 27 February, at least 35 people have been affected, and 11 houses have been damaged. 
  • Ecuador – Severe weather, update (ERCC) – At least nine people died, 19,969 people have been affected, 35 houses have been destroyed, and 5,913 houses and 12 bridges have been damaged due to landslides, floods and severe weather-related incidents across 23 out of 24 provinces in Ecuador. 
  • Peru – Floods and landslides (ERCC) – Heavy rainfall has been affecting Peru since January, causing landslides and flooding that have resulted in casualties, affected populations and damage. As of 26 February, at least seven people died and 57,225 people have been affected, including 17,167 children. In addition, 27,486 houses, 200 bridges, 79 classrooms and 14 health centres have been damaged or destroyed by landslides or flooding. 
  • Afghanistan – Severe weather and flash floods (ERCC) – The death toll is increasing following the heavy rain and flash floods that occurred across three provinces in southern and south-western Afghanistan on 25 February. According to media, 39 people died and 44 were injured. 24 casualties fell in Farah province, nine in Kandahar province and six in Helmand province.
