This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.

Security
- Sudan war: ‘Darkest chapters’ ahead as Darfur massacre claims over 100 lives (UN News) – As Sudan’s devastating war enters its third year, UN rights investigators are warning that its “darkest chapters” may still lie ahead, following the massacre of more than 100 people at displacement camps in Darfur over the weekend.
- In Sudan, hundreds killed in attacks on famine-hit displacement camps (NPR) – Hundreds of refugees in aid camps in Sudan have been killed by the paramilitary group at war with Sudan’s army, according to local rights groups.
- Algeria to expel 12 French embassy officials (BBC) – Algeria has asked 12 French embassy staff to leave the country within 48 hours, France’s foreign minister has said. Jean-Noël Barrot added that it was linked to the indictment of three Algerians in France on Friday, one of whom is a consular official.
- Russian missile strike kills 35 in Ukraine’s Sumy (Reuters) – Two Russian ballistic missiles slammed into the heart of the northern Ukrainian city of Sumy on Sunday, killing 35 people and wounding 117 in the deadliest strike on Ukraine this year, officials said. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy demanded a tough international response against Moscow over the attack, which came with U.S. President Donald Trump’s push to rapidly end the war struggling to make a breakthrough.
Demonstrations
- General strike against President Milei’s austerity disrupts Argentina (Associated Press) – Argentina’s trains and subways were disrupted, flights grounded, grain shipments interrupted, deliveries halted and banks shuttered as unions held a general strike Thursday against the libertarian government of President Javier Milei.
- Indigenous groups rally in Brasilia to demand land rights (Reuters) – Thousands of Indigenous people from across Brazil are rallying in the nation’s capital this week to demand protection for their land rights, fighting legislation that could make it impossible for some tribes to reclaim territory they were forced to leave.
- Lima grinds to a halt as Peru’s transit workers demand action against crime surge (Reuters) – Public transport workers in Peru’s capital of Lima went on strike on Thursday, stranding tens of thousands of people as they marched to Congress demanding action against a surging crime wave that has led to record numbers of murders.
Infrastructure
- Worker rescued from collapsed subway construction site in South Korea (AP News) – South Korean rescue workers on Saturday pulled a man from a collapsed subway construction site near the capital of Seoul and continued searching for another believed to be trapped inside.
- Israeli attack puts Gaza City hospital out of service (UN News) – A Gaza City hospital has been put out of action by an Israeli strike at the weekend. Some 40 patients whose condition is too critical to be moved from the health facility are continuing to receive care, while the 50 other remaining patients, including a child who died during evacuation, were evacuated to other medical centers shortly before the attack began.
Environment
- Myanmar and Thailand – Earthquake (ERCC) – As of 12 April, the death toll continues to rise in both Myanmar and Thailand. In Myanmar, there are 3,648 fatalities, 134 missing people, and 4,817 injured people, with approximately 200,000 displaced, of whom 42,118 are in 134 temporary shelters. 3.5 million people were already displaced before the 28 March earthquake struck. In Thailand, 42 people have died and 38 others have been injured.
- India – Severe weather (ERCC) – As of 14 April, media report a total of 102 fatalities, 82 of which ocurred across most of the Bihar state and 20 in the Uttar Pradesh state, where the worst affected districts are Firozabad, Siddharth Nagar, and Sitapur.
- Afghanistan – Landslide (ERCC) – As of 14 April, three fatalities and one injured person due to a landslide that occurred on 10 April in the area of the Gulsalak village (Chapadara district, western Kunar province).
Health
- US measles total passes 700 as Arkansas reports first cases (CIDRAP) – The CDC said cases have now been reported from 25 jurisdictions, with though most are part of 7 outbreaks.
- Saudi Arabia reports cases of invasive meningococcal disease linked to Umrah (CIDRAP) – The World Health Organization says 17 cases of IMD have been linked to the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
- Mpox activity escalates in Uganda as vaccine shipments to Africa pass 1 million doses (CIDRAP) – In Uganda, the virus is spreading in urban areas and among sexual networks, posing contact-tracing challenges.
