Security
- US-Somali airstrikes kill al Shabaab militants, hit weapons ship (Reuters) – Two joint Somali-U.S. airstrikes killed 12 al Shabaab militants in central Somalia and destroyed a ship carrying weapons for the al Qaeda-linked group, the Somali government said on Thursday, following recent advances by the Islamists.
- Israel continues pounding on Gaza, at least 40 killed in strikes (France 24) – Gaza’s civil defense agency said Thursday that a rash of Israeli air strikes killed at least 40 people, most of them in encampments for displaced civilians, as Israel pressed its offensive in the Palestinian territory. The Israeli military said it was looking into reports of the strikes, which came as Hamas officials reported that internal deliberations on the latest Israeli truce offer were nearly complete.
Infrastructure
- Boat catches fire in Congo killing at least 50 people (Africa News) – A boat has capsized after catching fire in northwestern Congo, leaving at least 50 people dead and hundreds missing, a local official said on Wednesday. Dozens were saved following the accident on the Congo River late on Tuesday night, many of them with bad burns. The search for the missing was underway Wednesday with rescue teams supported by the Red Cross and provincial authorities.
- Four dead after dredging vessel capsizes off Philippines (Reuters) – Four people, including a Chinese national, have died and seven others are still missing off a western Philippine province after a dredging vessel carrying 25 people capsized two days ago, the Philippine Coast Guard said on Thursday. The MV Hong Hai 16 was carrying 2,000 litres of lube oil and 30,000 litres of diesel when it capsized on April 15 in waters off Occidental Mindoro, with containment efforts underway to prevent an oil spill, the PCG said in a statement.
- Haitians face record hunger as gang violence grips country in throes of economic crisis (Associated Press) – More than half of Haiti’s population is expected to experience severe hunger through June, and another 8,400 people living in makeshift shelters are projected to starve, according to a new report released this week.
Environment
- Democratic Republic of the Congo – Floods (ERCC) – As of 15 April, approximately 10,000 people have been displaced due to the Rugumba River overflow, with Kalemie and Nyunzu towns, in the central Tanganyika Province, being the most affected. In addition, thousands of people are still without shelter, and houses, schools and crops have been damaged or destroyed.
- Pakistan – Severe weather (ERCC) – As of 16 April, one person was killed and another injured in a flood event in Chilas city, located in the Kashmir region of northern Pakistan. The flooding also caused disruptions to traffic and electricity, as well as substantial damage to buildings, vehicles, and crops.
Health
- WHO, Africa CDC update mpox strategy amid progress in outbreak countries (CIDRAP) – Cases are declining in some hot spot countries, as officials warns that nations outside Africa are still reporting imported cases.
- Mexico’s fatal H5N1 case involved D1.1 genotype, which has been tied to serious illness (CIDRAP) – No poultry outbreaks were reported in the patient’s state, but there were detections in wild birds.
- Colombia declares health emergency due to yellow fever cases, deaths (Reuters) – The Colombian government declared a nationwide health emergency late on Wednesday due to an increase in yellow fever cases.
Humanitarian
- Humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate in El Fasher, Sudan (UN News) – Escalating violence and deteriorating humanitarian conditions in and around El Fasher in Sudan continue to be of grave concern, the United Nations said on Wednesday. The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and former ally the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is in its third year and last week saw RSF-affiliated forces launch deadly attacks on the city – capital of North Darfur state – as well as the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps for displaced people.
