World Status Report

This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries. 

More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security 

• 10 Niger soldiers killed in attack in the south (Reuters) – About 10 soldiers were killed and seven injured in an attack in Niger’s Dosso region this week, authorities said in a statement broadcast on state radio, while a security source told Reuters the death toll could be higher. The statement attributed Monday’s ambush in southern Niger to “terrorists” and said several of the assailants had been killed and others arrested. 
• A man with a knife slashes 2 people at a Tokyo subway station and is arrested (AP News) – A man with a knife slashed two passengers on a train stopping at a Tokyo subway station during the evening rush on Wednesday, and their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Japanese police and media reported. The 43-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder, Tokyo’s metropolitan police said.  
• At least two killed in Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv (EURO News) – The attack came ahead of a planned unilateral 72-hours ceasefire announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin to coincide with celebrations in Moscow marking Victory Day in World War II.      
• Israeli strikes across Gaza kill at least 59 as Israel prepares to ramp up its offensive (ARAB News) – Israeli strikes across Gaza killed at least 59 people, including women and children, hospital officials said Wednesday, as Israel prepares to ramp up its campaign against Hamas in a devastating war now entering its 20th month. 
• India strikes Pakistan over tourist killings, Pakistan says it will retaliate (Reuters) – India hit Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir with missiles on Wednesday and Pakistan said it had shot down five Indian aircraft and vowed to retaliate, in the worst clash in more than two decades between the nuclear-armed neighbours. 

Environment 

• Ecuador – Floods and landslides (ERCC) – With over 1,322 reported landslides and 1,163 flood incidents, the consequences include loss of life, extensive destruction, and significant damage. As at 6 May, according to the National Secretariat for Risk Management (SNGR), 49 people died, more than 189,200 people have been affected, and 61,149 buildings have been damaged or destroyed since 1 January. 
• Indonesia – Severe weather (ERCC) – As of 6 May, a total of 51 people were evacuated in West Java Province on 4 May. Notably, West Java Province has been under a state of emergency since October 8, 2024, which is set to remain in effect until May 31, 2025. In addition to West Java, Gorontalo Province experienced tornadoes, resulting in the evacuation of 81 people and affecting a total of 248 individuals. 
• India – Severe weather (ERCC) – According to media reports, at least 14 people have died – including five in Kheda district, four in Dahod, three in Vadodara, one in Ahmedabad, and one in Aravalli – while 16 others have been injured. Additionally, seven houses have been reported damaged: six in Panchmahal and one in Kheda. 
• Thailand – Severe weather (ERCC) – On 5–6 April, heavy rain and strong winds affected the provinces of Sukhothai and Nakhon Phanom in north-western and eastern Thailand, respectively, resulting in damage. According to the ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet), nearly 1,600 people have been affected, along with at least 400 houses – 390 in Sukhothai and seven in Nakhon Phanom. 

Health 

• Possible community spread of measles in Manitoba (CIDRAP). In Canadian measles developments, Manitoba health officials are seeing spread beyond contacts, hinting at potential community transmission through schools or perhaps bus routes, according to the Winnipeg Sun. Previous cases in the province had all been related to travel or direct contact with an infected person.
