One of the most important things you can do to prepare for your time abroad is familiarize yourself with your host country.
Research important health and safety considerations for your destination by consulting the following resources:
- Read the Travel Advisories issued by the U.S. Department of State
- Review the CDC’s Travel Health Notices
- Read your destination’s consulate page published by the U.S. Department of State
- Log in to International SOS using UTD membership ID #11BSGC000037 and search for your host country to view medical and travel security risk ratings
Anything you can do to learn more about your destination will enhance your study abroad experience. You can start by researching the following topics:
- Type of government
- Geography and climate
- Education system
- Religions and holidays
- Socioeconomic classes
- Relationship with the United States
- Race relations
- Gender roles
- LGBT+ support
- Accessibility of public buildings, sidewalks, and transportation systems
