Discuss Your Finances
Most financial aid and scholarships are applicable to Education Abroad programs, but you should work with the Office of Financial Aid to ensure your funding can be applied to the program you have chosen.
Students receiving institutional scholarships (i.e., Terry, National Merit, McDermott) should meet with their scholarship office to discuss their plans to study abroad and any steps they will need to take to secure funding for their program. If you plan on applying financial aid or AES funding to your program, make an appointment to meet with your financial aid advisor. Here are a few questions you should ask when you discuss your funding:
- Can my funding only be used toward UT Dallas tuition?
- If yes, consider exchange programs, internships, independent study, or faculty-led programs.
- Can I apply my funding toward tuition at another institution or toward a third-party program fee?
- If yes, consider UTD tuition-based programs (see above) and also affiliated partner programs.
- Are there any steps I need to take in order to apply my funding to the program I’ve chosen?
- When can I expect my funding to be disbursed?
- How many credit hours do I need to take in order to maintain my eligibility?
- Does my current funding allow me to apply for other study abroad scholarships? Will my funding be impacted if I’m awarded another scholarship?
Keep in mind that study abroad opportunities vary in terms of affordability. Most program brochures will include budget estimates to give you an idea of the costs you can expect to incur if you choose that program. However, actual costs may be higher or lower depending on your lifestyle and personal spending habits. Be sure to create a budget for yourself and be mindful of what’s not included in the published program cost. Additional expenses for meals, travel, souvenirs, and excursions can add up quickly.
